I caught ten minutes of a phone in today which more or less said: for self inflicted illnesses i.e smoking related and obesity, the individual would be charged for treatment for said illness.

Now I think this is a outrage, i've payed my dues and now i'm being hung out to dry, not to mention the handouts to certain illegal immegrants which undoubtedly contribute to the 1.3 billion deficit the NHS faces.

I can understand why people who don't smoke and don't eat too much resent paying to subsidise the healthcare of people that do, but that is how it goes in most health systems in the West, including the US.

I get pretty annoyed with some of the 'smoking costs the NHS money' arguments, though, because the numbers are often manipulated in a pretty shoddy way. The average smoker, for example, has paid a lot of tax on their cigarette consumption; additionally, everyone dies eventually and it's often an expensive business however it occurs. Something like 80% of healthcare expenses go on people in their last few months of life, I think (I had read that this was the case in the UK and it was confirmed to me by someone that works in healthcare strategy in the US that it was similar here). We all have a last few months of life; what the debaters need to do is be clear about subtracting the expected cost of life's healthcare for a non-smoker from that of a smoker and show us the numbers, compare it to the tax they paid and see what the cost is. If you want to assess cost against them, it should be weighted by that, not full cost of treatment.

when i was speaking about paying my dues, i meant taxes and NI contributions and the like. I don't mind paying all those things because I always thought that things like the NHS would be there when i may need it. No I'm not naive i know the country is fucked, but there are far more things than obesity bringing the NHS to its knees.....i think the term Fat Tax was used in the discussion i was listening to and yes they are trying to legislate for this.

Where would it stop, we are told that jogging is good for us, are they going to charge us for injured knees or hip replacement or whatever injury you get from jogging.

Obviously backed by the government, so the thread should have read "are the government taking the piss?" Answer, yes they fucking are, but that was too obvious.

It's about risk. If you have two groups, group A and group B and, all else being equal, group B are more likely to get sick, then if people from both groups pay the same on average, group A is subsidising group B. It's not very complicated.

However, my point is that the maths is often twisted, in my opinion, to make it look like group B (smokers, in this case) are leeching more than they are.

So, where is this proposed? Is it going to a vote in Parliament?

The only reason that i will find that annoying is because it's annoying. I am a smoker you daft cunt, this is not my point.

I smoke a lot, I drink a considerable amount and I'm partial to shit food....and lots of it . I've never been any sort of burden on the health service. Being born and having my tonsils out, oh, and a few stitches here and there cannot be called a burden.

Again, that isn't my point, it's more to do with the government asking us to bail the bastards out.

The immigration and asylum issue is just that, an issue. There are no screenings of these people as they enter this country. African immigrants/asylum seekers are high up there, as there country is almost at epidemic levels with HIV and all the Hep's. This is a good starting place for the government to save money(don't put it on the NHS's toes in the first fucking place....I have no racist agenda.

With the government so eagerly trying to stop everybody smoking, is this a stealth tax?......yeah i know, paranoid to fuck, and that's just smoking.....and they sold us the cigs in the first place, they win twice.
