Letter to my room mate

So having moved up to Portland, OR, I'm subletting a place for the summer, from some uber hippies, who even have chickens in their back yard to give them eggs. Today my roomie writes me from work...

quote:

for some reason, your interest in libertarianism reminds me that you may be interested in the atheist organization around the corner from us - down next to Yola's - the guy who runs it has been there for about 30 years and has been fighting the good fight forever, they have a get together every Tuesday at 7:30? where they have some focused discussion on some aspect of atheism or they review that weeks news that may be of interest. we have mutual friends in india also, which i thought was a nice coincidence after i moved into the neighborhood - we both have connections at a Athiest Ashram in Vijawada, india

cheers, jeff

i responded...

atheism used to be my big passion. i would protest at churches, with signs saying "dump religion, get science...and sleep in on sundays." nowadays, i don't take much interest in all that any more, as i see religion to be pretty much irrelevant. i know what i believe, and i don't really care about changing or convincing anyone else. the reason politics interests me, is that if i work to help my belief system, i can actually achieve things that benefit me--like fewer tax-funded social services, fewer laws which restrict my personal freedom, etc. politics seems to have vastly more practical value to me than sitting around with a group of people and talking about this being we all don't believe in. if this was four or five years ago, i'd still be the rabid apolitical atheist who just wanted to destroy religion, and go to atheist meetings.

and even with politics, actually, i'm at a point now where i'm starting to see it as being the same way. as a libertarian you fight and fight for liberty, but eventually you see that people just don't want it. they want to control whom you marry, what criteria your business uses to hire/fire people, what charities to spend your money on, how much you have to pay your employees, etc. etc. i think you can only deal with pick-pockets in a nice "let's play fair" way for so long, then sooner or later, you have to say, "look, i'm never going to convince them to play fair", and just start playing by their rules. if liberals want to tax me, fine; i'll set up on off shore bank account, and evade taxes like the baddest mofo you ever heard of. if they tax me 2,000$, i'll destroy 2,000$ worth of government property, from public school windows, to police car headlights. if a republican passes a law saying sodomy is illegal...i'll rape him. well...i don't know whether i'm that convicted to by principles...maybe just use something prosthetic. you get my drift.

a lot of my libertarian friends tell me to hold out, because we're making progress, and getting more and more people to embrace freedom, so i'm still hanging on by a thread, even when all my instincts tell me to just give up on humanity, and rape and pillage like there's no tomorrow. "every man for himself, because no one will play fair." i'm also going to keep holding out, because right now i still want to pursue music. i'm in no position to throw any economic weight around. if that doesn't pan out, i'll probably go back to school and study economics and business, and get into the business world, and try to use every legal loophole i can to evade taxes, and put people into local school boards who will work to lower funding for schools as much as possible. i'll do everything i can to escalate government bureauacracy and its behemoth inefficiency. i want to throw a wrench into the cogs of society that makes them loose at least as much wealth as what they've stolen in the form of taxes. ahhh...it will be grand. i'll sit in a big swiveling whale skin chair on a high up office building, pushing buttons that open up trap doors beneath random citizens feet. hah hah hah hahhhh...the world will be miiine! miiiiiiiine!!!!

i hope my hippie roomies don't think i'm crazy now
