Thanks. I actually had two girlfriends (Stormy was never a girlfriend) that moved to Mabank. And, yes it is in the sticks.

How in the sticks is it? Well, it is in very close proximity to Gun Barrel City which got its name from the fact that all of the property corners were set using old gun barrels.

Which was done because when the survey was made to platt the municipal area, the man doing so had a great surplus of gun barrels. He was a carpetbagger from Massachusetts who took a lot of surrendered Confederate weapons as surplus property at sale by the US Army. One condition of the sale required that the weapons be rendered irreparably inoperable by sawing the barrels free from the receivers. They made good survey stakes.

The other story of the origin of the name has it that when the first settlers in the area began clearing land, they found a big old oak tree with a gunbarrel embedded in it, where a limb joined the trunk. Supposedly it was a matchlock musket, stock and forepiece rotted away, with Spanish makers marks on it. So far as I could ever find out, the story is entirely apocryphal.

I'll go with the first one. Mainly because I worked on a survey crew for a while and when we worked in Gun Barrel City, almost every property corner we found was in fact a hollow metal tube. The ones that were not were often associated with the subdivision of a parcel.
