Modern mental frames that become dominant and spread like viruses in society tend to be inherently negative and depressing. Life wasn't always a barrage of mundane paperwork, complacency, servility, consumerist conformity, etc. It is generally a minority of people who are aware of just how scripted their lives are and how much they're being controlled by social, economic, and political forces.
Getting back to the original topic: it's become apparent to me lately how much the essence and meaning of life lies in not just intellectual adversity, but the embracing of and passion for it. It's the plunging into intellectual hell and the enjoyment of doing so. That is real living, and its where human greatness, for what it's worth, blossoms. All life flourishes on a battlefield; wherever there is comfort and complacency there is dying and death. If it were otherwise, then we would be immortal, and be living in a complete daze. This isn't sadistic though- if you cleanse it of all external criteria-all fear, pain, and inhibition- and plunge into the void of living yourself, it becomes clear that there's nothing more natural to the human condition.
