I have never been called anything much except Charles. For a short time in Sayre Oklahoma (one of the 26 schools I attended) when I was in the 6th grade nearly everybody in school called me Chuck. In the University of Texas in 1947 after the war those persons who knew me from the Germanic Languages department called me Chuck. But those are two very short periods in my 79 years that I was called Chuck by any significant number of people--and I have not had other nicknames that I can recall.
When I lived in Michigan for a short time (4 months) in 1943 I was called Tex or when I was not present I was called "the hillbilly". My Dad was called "Turp" (a shortening of our last name) and I have been called that a few times but not many. Mostly it has been plain vanilla Charles. I am Oxsan in this forum because I was born in the Chinese year of the OX and "san" is an honorific oriental suffix. Despite Mugtoe's negative you can call me anything you please.

Strangely enough, I have almost never been called Charlie.

NJ state employees get Columbus Day, which was irritating when I went to the DMV in Trenton two years running to get my license renewed on what turned out to be Columbus Day. I hadn't even seen anything explaining that it was Columbus Day and I don't think that anyone gets it as a holiday outside of Government.
Schools here seem to take Columbus Day, although the University doesn't (nor does it take Labour Day).

Banks are closed on Columbus Day by Federal Law aren't they?

Most "holidays" here mainly benefit state and federal employees. I only get two paid holidays and those are Christmas and Global Thermonuclear War. The second one hasn't happened yet, but I am gathering hope.

Good question. I hardly ever go into a bank (and haven't since I was 18 or so). I guess that maybe they say that the regulatory staff are off that day, so banks have to shut (although banks do open on Saturdays).

You are not even fucking human. No wonder you hate Independence Day. It is like a double whammy.

Why would anyone go into a bank on any sort of regular basis nowadays?
When I was 18, stores in the UK started giving cashback on the UK equivalent of visa debit cards, so even going to the bank machine outside the bank became less necessary. We got a reduction in most bills for paying by direct debit and even if we didn't, all bills would accept payment by direct debit, at worst at no additional cost from the bank or the bill-sender (which wasn't the case when we came to the US, but appears to be more common now). You can ay cheques in at the bank machine, but most people that would have previously sent cheques pay money directly into my account.
Banks suck. Particularly BoA (and why does anyone take a mortgage with them? They charge absurd amounts). Standing in a queue in a bank would probably make you appreciate a movie about attempted annhilation of humanity, however.
