Not to take away from your point, but a black kid walking all over town in the Panhandle at that time might have taken away a different perspective on things. That is, if he made it home. And it wouldn't have been sexual predators or criminals he'd have had to worry about.
It was very true in your experience, and it is a valuable experience that you were fortunate to have and which is sad that we have lost even for a small portion of society. And it doesn't take away from your point, as I said, but it should be put in perspective. The world may not be nicer than it was before the 1960's, but part of the upheaval of that time was simply caused by all those other segments of society trying to assert their rights and the negative reaction by the existing power structure that maintained that kinder world you enjoyed.
I might engage in a bit of euphoric recall myself, except for the fact that just being gay back then was a felony and could've gotten me killed with not a peep from anyone in town. There were surely a fair percentage of people who grew up in that same atmosphere who were twisted because of that repression, and you would never have known it.
