voting equipment changes, Benewah County, Idaho

Cherry Yidaki has voted.

I stepped into the dimly-lit Benedictine Hall looking for the radical changes and evil, mechanical voting machines I've heard so much about. At first glance I was disappointed. There were the same 4 rickety "voting booths" with the same stained red-and-white striped curtains hanging in front for privacy. There were the same old ladies I see every time sitting at card tables with their recording books and paper ballots. They all knew me. I've known all of them for years.

3 paper ballots this year. Woo hoo! A blue, a yellow and a white one. I assured the ballot lady that I would not leave the booth before folding them individually, since it seemed to be a big deal to her. She pointed to the guardian of a padlocked strongbox with a slot cut in the top, to indicate where to take my folded ballots once I was done in the booth.

The booth. As cramped and musty as always. Too flimsy for me to lean against while I read and put my "X's" in the little boxes, as I recall. Same ratty length of string taped to the same pencil to keep it from running off during the day. But what's this? Something new!

By God, they sharpened the pencil this year. I'm not sure how to take that....

some times simple things work better, I am not sure about those new fangled voting machines, but the whole population of Benewah County is less than 10,000 (accroding to Wikipedia) Thank you Mr. Yidaki for doing your part....I didnt vote.. I am new to my state and frankly I am sure of the issues, this will not happen next time. But if I get another election call before 8:00 am I may scream, I am glad this election is over. I think those preprecorded message should be outlawed (oh in some states they are)

Besides Bonner and Boundry counties, Benewah is one of North Idaho's counties I haven't been aressted in.

I judge counties by their jails.

We've got an old ship's brig set on the top story of the courthouse for a jail. heh Did you see a couple of years ago when those guys gouged a hole through the wall with their toothbrush handles, then made their escape in a mail delivery station wagon? heh heh

Yeah - they didn't get far.

No, I missed that.

Nez Peirce County.... Best jail I've been to.

Kootnei County.... Worst.

Shoshone is better than Latah county but I usually know someone in Shoshone.

I've managed to stay out of the hoosegows, for the most part. Did have to overnight in the Bozeman, Montana jail once for drunk and disorderly, with a concealed weapon charge due to my bootknife. They confiscated my brass knuckles, too, as I recall. Dickwads. We were just having a little fun, you know?

What the fuck? We've got Congressional Medal of Honor winner Vernon Baker here in Benewah County. And there are a few other black people scattered around, mostly on the Coeur d'Alene reservation. If you're looking for niggras you'll have to head up to Shoshone. heh

I just voted too, and they did switch to the electronic doohickeys. Last year they had the lever machines in private booths. This year I walked in and it's just a coridoor with an array of 8 of these things:

Fanned out. Not very private. I could see who the people in front of me were voting for, and the people behind me could see mine. And, when you're done with your ballot, this right button not on the screen but on the top of the iVotronic starts bleeting and flashing red, making it nearly impossible to NOT look up everytime that happens.

Otherwise, the machines were ridiculously easy to use, just touch screen MegaTouch style. Though there's a weird feeling when you just finish and that's it. Nothing gets printed, nothing makes a satisfying "ca-chunk" noise, it just flashes back to the default screen. I'm a latent Luddite anyway, so it was sort of unsettling. "Well, I hope those iVotronic computer programmers have somehow avoided the problem of making a computer that fucks up occassionally, like every single other computer on earth." Somewhere in the guts of the bizarro machine, sure hope everything's fair and square, my vote gets added, and the machine gets downloaded and counted correctly.

Course, I'd never know it if it didn't, and apparantly have no right, or ability, to confirm or find out. But, I'm sure the programmers and iVotronic board members and election officials and Secretary of States are all flawlessly competent and trustworthy people, and I should just not bother my pretty little head about such things, right?

Right?

Better to just not think about it and place total faith in the inherent goodness and competency of the people in charge and who have the most to gain by not counting your votes correctly. You have no right to question.

Don't worry. Relax, guy. Look over there.

These are not the droids you are looking for.

Maybe switching to range voting would solve all our problems. Has anyone thought of that? Is there anyone around who knows more about this fascinating means of ballotting, I wonder? Someone who could explain in exquisite detail and at great length how superior it is to our clunky old means of voting currently in place?

No?

Dang.

That's Broken Ladder you're thinking of, not me.

And it has nothing to do with the equipment or mechanics of voting.
