admirable restraint

I'm surprised to see that, in here at least, liberal victory celebrations haven't been too obnoxious or noisesome.

Congrats. Be well.

We'd be cheering if Bush got impeached or something ( although that would possibly let Cheney take command ), as it is it's just a win for the lesser of two evils.

Nice to see that the voting populus of the US has woken up a little I guess.

My only hope, and to be honest it's a slim one, is that Democrats won't take this as a blank check from the voters to do whatever they want as the Republicans did.

Despite my socialist leanings, I'd prefer a little restraint and moderation in government for a change.
And a little more actual listening to the voters.
The Dem victories of yesterday aren't an endorsement of Dems so much as an indictment of the outright arrogance the Reps have shown over the last four years IMO.

Let's hope they don't make the same mistakes.

It's not a blank check because well there is still a republican president in office and a supreme court with a couple of his appointees.

Let us hope that our government can remember how to function with checks and balances after six years of not bothering with them.

Understood. But if the Dems take the White House in 2008 (and I think it's theirs to win or lose at this point) that could very well end in the situation I mentioned.

It's possible they could, but at this point we don't know who is running for either of the two, so I'll worry about that when that comes.

I'd rather have a Republican Congress and a Democrat President for some reason. I'm not sure why.

And really, I was looking over the various ballot issues that went through or didn't last night, and they all show a fairly strong bent towards republican issues(outside of minimum wage that is) so it seems pretty obvious this isn't some sudden surge by the populace to the left, but an expression of displeasure about the actions of an unrestrained republican party. So whether the dems will take the presidential office, and/or retain congress, will largely depend on how they, and the republicans react to this. If the dems go all apeshit trying to throw their weight around in the wrong places, they'll likely find themselves out on their ass again, particularly if the republicans do a bit of house cleaning and get their act together again.

Maybe because last time we had that, it wasn't so bad.

Other than the impeachment fiasco.

More like 10 to 12 years, I'd have thought.

I think that the GOP expected to lose the House, but not by as much as they did. The Senate, if the Dems take it, is the big potential shock, though. This wasn't supposed to be a good year for Dems in the Senate given the seats that were up for grabs.

On top of that, it's not that old a sequence. The Dems had 40 years of controlling the House, I think.

What's sad is that the last chapters of the 1994 'Contract with America' GOP Congress were not only terrible but that they did so much to undermine the potential future impact of the Contract. The GOP have to re-embrace that spirit and convince the electorate that they really mean it, this time.

The GOP found out at Christmas 1995 that if they ever actually went whole-hog for the core provisions of the contract, particularly those concerning fiscal restraint, the people would punish them for it and the Democrats would play them like a fiddle on the matter.

I'm afraid that a lot of the most important parts of the contract are just politically unworkable when dealing with an electorate that has an entitlement mentality. The idea of the contract was more appealing than a lot of its provisions were.

Having said that, they still managed to balance the budget and the most punishment they suffered, up until now, was for the bizarro Clinton hounding extremes.
