The Fark headline said it best.

"Director Robert Altman dead. Funeral expected to be star-studded, rambling, plotless."

Ironically, in my screenwriting class just last week we talked about The Player and I went on a rant about what a self-satisfied twat Altman was. Now I kind of feel bad.

I agree, generally. However, one of Altman's least-respected films--Popeye--is a secret favorite of mine.

Ack. Man, I haven't seen that one in like 15 years. Maybe I should give it a look.

For the record, I tend to really like Altman's movies in their second acts. At about the 2/3rd mark, though, they devolve into smug rambling nonsense.

I need to rent Kansas City again though, or pick up a copy somewhere.

I might have enjoyed it more had I not seen Jennifer Jason Leigh play the same character much more effectively in Hudsucker Proxy.

The cinematography in Popeye is unbelievable, especially given when it was made. As is the acting, in its way. It's like a pocket universe.
