Up to 80 Beluga Whales Trapped in Arctic Slaughtered

Inuit slaughter whales trapped in ice

Up to 80 beluga whales trapped in the ice in Canada's Arctic are now being killed by hunters.

There is only a small hole left for the whales to breath through and native Inuit hunters have decided to kill the animals, saying they can no longer escape to open water and will soon die.

The residents of Tuktoyaktuk in Canada's high Arctic are mostly native Inuit, who have hunted the Beluga whale for millennia.

Even so, local residents have been watching the plight of the whales all week with sadness, cheering the whales on and encouraging them to try to escape the shrinking hole in the ice to open water.

The hunters have been holding off but are now convinced the whales can no longer escape.

The belugas weigh up to three tonnes each and a single animal would feed several families for an entire winter.

Inuit hunters are using a combination of rifles and harpoons to kill the whales and pull them onto the ice, where they are immediately butchered.

I wonder how difficult it would be to do this. These guys are used to clubbing easily catchable baby seals, so I guess it's not too big a deal for them.

Their daddy's are rich and their moms are good looking.

You're so full of shit. Those folks live a very tough, pragmatic existence that would probably have you curled up in the fetal position and crying yourself to death if you had to endure it.

I imagine they look at it as a sad blessing. Beluga blubber is prized for it's high vitaman C content and they will eat well as a result of the whale's misfortune. But it's a tragedy for so many beautiful animals, which they depend upon for life, to die when their gifts aren't strictly needed.

And it will entail an insane amount of work to try and process that much whale without too much wasteage or drawing every predator and scavenger for a hundred miles around into their village.

The good they'll get from this is going to be heavily balanced, or even outweighed, by the bad. I feel sorry for the eskimos as well as the sea canaries.

edit: Oh, and it aint the eskimos who started - or continue to support - the practice of baby seal clubbing.

Well, no use letting the meat and blubber go to waste. Furthermore, it's not like it'll go bad, being they live in the northern hemisphere's deep freeze. Putting some out away from the villages would be a boone to the polar bear and arctic fox population as well keeping them away from the igloo folk. If they sold some of the meat to Japan, they could buy some new snowmobiles.

They could always send me a beluga steak. I'd give it a whirl on the grill.
