BB/pellet gun (preferrably the latter). It's fun, too. We use to do it to get rid of starlings, which is slightly less effective, at least long term, but nothing like getting a case of beer and sitting in lawn chairs waitin for the starlings to come 'round....

I would suggest the Bubba Sparxxx album "Deliverance" for when you're doin' the sittin' and waitin'.

Actually, can I just come over? That sounds like a pretty good weekend.

There's this large bird that dosen't look at all like a woodpecker that pecks the aluminum side of our fireplace every spring. It's the same goddamm bird every year for the past 10 years. Can a bird live that long?
It's so cool. Every morning we hear RAT RAT RAT RAT from our fireplace and he continues to do that for about a month then stops till next year.
We look foward to him coming back every year.
I swear it's not a woodpecker. It's as large as a crow,but it's brown with spots.

What color spots? How big is it?

Is it this:

If so, that's a color variation of a starling.

I picked up my hate of starlings from my grandpa--also where I got into birdwatching. He lived in the Ozarks, in Arkansas, and we used to visit him pretty regularly. His house backed into some mountains and woods, and he had all kind s of birdfeeders and boxes around. But man, he hated starlings. They come in and eat all the foot and chase all the other birds away. When he'd see one he'd squawk like somebody just spilled beer on the rug, and he'd run to the garage to get his rifle, and then spend the next few minutes stalking before popping the thing. He wasn't a very good shot, but he would sure get onery about it. If he happened to miss (about half the time) he'd spend the next half an hour cursin' like a sailor, and the veins would pop out on his forehead.

Incidentally, I've been meaning to post this thread...I think I did once but nobody had anything useful to say. I've been for years looking for an online site that has recordings of bird calls. When you google "bird calls" all you get is hunting stuff--I mean so you can identify a bird by sound. I used to be into birdwatching (when I was a kid), and most birds I can identify by call, but every once in awhile I'll hear something (lately, been a bird at night) that I can't think of what it could be, and can't rightly type in the text version of what it sounds like. I used to have tapes with bird calls on it which were great, but I don't have them anymore.

Anybody know of any websites with like lots of .wav clips of bird sounds or something?

That's just a downy woodpecker. The most common kind in North America. No harm in plugging a few of them.

edit: oops

That's a downy woodpecker or a hairy woodpecker (they look pretty similar; the downy woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in the USA).

Only a homosekshual dwarf scumbag Democrat would shoot them.

Also: most common.

No one will miss a few, bacid.

Unless it looks like this:

Leave that one alone.

The feathers are right but the beak is..thicker and a little longer. And it's the size of a black crow.
I haven't heard it say anything. It just pecks away.
Maybe it's looking for some birdie pootang.

If the feathers are right it's probably a starling.

Incidentally, starlings, like crows, actually sound pretty cool, and have even been known to mimic things. Starlings are supposedly among the smartest birds there are. Also, a huge nuisance, probably because of that.

The ones we got were usually black and a shiny purple, but they have a pretty wide variant in terms of how they look, including brown with spots.

Course, it could be a wood thrush, which you probably shouldn't shoot. Thrushes are cool. But I don't know that it'd get that big. Or bang on your house.

I shouldn't be surprised. Some people merely call them 'the redheaded woodpecker', I gather, but we shouldn't worry about those plebians.
