How 'real' is the internet?

In #wota we were talking about how real the internet really is. Do you think that emotions are at stake when you make a post in the forum, or type out a line of chat? Or are you one who believes that this can be more real then real life itself?

It all depends. If it's someone I respect or know personally, I might treat it the same as with real life. On the other hand, I never get upset by flames, insults, etc. Why? Because I don't give a damn what most of you people think. I don't know you, you don't know me, it's all just a fun little interaction.

Personally, I think that if you are emotionally hurt by something someone who doesn't know you said in a forum called the Asylum, you've got serious problems.

Well, when one has no real life they rely on the net. Sad? Very. At least I can admit I'm a loser with no life though.

And since I tend to be an overly emotional person, things said online can effect me as much as they would in real life. Depending on how I'm feeling that day.

The internet is a real thing! I think that it has a real effect on all of us, and you *MUST* care what people think of you, even if they are just 'people from the internet'. If you didn't then why would you still be here?

You're not deserving of my points, Mr Caffidinkicus. And of course I care what certain people online think about me. People I take the time to get to know personally, and people who take the time get to know me personally. I'll always care what they think of me, and of course I'd be hurt if they said something offensive to me.

Even if it is 'just' online, you can still form relationships of any kind, as long as your heart & mind are open.

Yes, the internet is very real to me. Kinda like what Caffiene said, these are real people. I act differently over the net than I do IRL, but since I have no RL, I live vicariously through here.

I know that I make emotional reactions, and actions all the time when I am on the internet. If you can't care enough about what *REAL* people have to say about you, then I feel sorry for you.

No one really comes here looking for friends, everyone has their own reason, many of them overlapping. I am not just a name on the screen, I am a real person. Just because I know I might not meet you, doesn't mean I won't share my feelings with you, or become friends with you.

I have to agree with you, that most people do not come here looking for pity, or some sort of sorrow. People sometimes think the internet isn't as real as it is. When you type something out, real people are reading that, real people are reacting, and real people are caring.

i think that alot of people come here for an exchange of ideas and information. true, that is a form of attention, but not necessarily in the sense i assume that you mean. there are some people that come here to feed off of this place, to get some sense of "belonging" and worship. they feel they need perfect strangers telling them that they're pretty, that they're smart, special, etc. hence all the "i hate myself and i'm ugly. ( please post here and tell me that i'm not)" posts. but i think that for the most part, the community here is interested more in the intellectual, rather than the self-esteem boosts.
