I know that I make emotional reactions, and actions all the time when I am on the internet. If you can't care enough about what *REAL* people have to say about you, then I feel sorry for you.
No one really comes here looking for friends, everyone has their own reason, many of them overlapping. I am not just a name on the screen, I am a real person. Just because I know I might not meet you, doesn't mean I won't share my feelings with you, or become friends with you.
I have to agree with you, that most people do not come here looking for pity, or some sort of sorrow. People sometimes think the internet isn't as real as it is. When you type something out, real people are reading that, real people are reacting, and real people are caring.

i don't care what words on a screen say about me. why is it so hard to disassociate from the internet? unless i've met you face to face, you're not my friend. i hope that doesn't "offend" anyone. i didn't come here looking for friends. i come to see other people's points of view, different opinions, and maybe interact with a name on the screen for a little while. there are some things here that have made me emotional, but in a different sense. some of redguard's posts have moved me to tears. but so can a book, or a picture. works of art can do that to you.
i respect many people here, and i am always open for a conversation or mail exchange. but the reality is, i'm never going to meet 95% of this forum. so why get emotionally attached?
"if you didn't why are you still here?"
i think that alot of people come here for an exchange of ideas and information. true, that is a form of attention, but not necessarily in the sense i assume that you mean. there are some people that come here to feed off of this place, to get some sense of "belonging" and worship. they feel they need perfect strangers telling them that they're pretty, that they're smart, special, etc. hence all the "i hate myself and i'm ugly. ( please post here and tell me that i'm not)" posts. but i think that for the most part, the community here is interested more in the intellectual, rather than the self-esteem boosts.
