favourite horror movies

i don't really know that many good ones apart from dagon and inferno. oh and army of darkness. wait, dog soldiers too. jackob's ladder as well but that's not really a horror flick.

but anyway, top 5 favourites? if you want to write a blurb about it that'd be great too.

I had a halloween party last year, and wanted to buy a really good horror flick to watch later at night with friends. So I went to the video store and someone recommended 'Shaun of the Dead' Where the hell is so 'horrifying'' about that movie?! I laughed my ass off.

...also are we looking at just English horror movies or can I name the korean/thai/ and japanese ones? Then I'd recommend 'Shutter' It's a thai horror flick, pretty good.

Dogcow always has a secret agenda.

Movies that have been known to work for me: old Dawn of the Dead, Entity, Scarface, Bad Taste, Braindead, Henry, certain parts of Fire in the Sky...

I wanna see this one:

Seems like Evil Dead 1 & 2 would be more along the lines of horror than Army of Darkness.

For comedy/horror, my favorite is Return of the Living Dead. Reminds us that burning zombies in a furnace is not the way to dispose of them.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Psycho
The Shinning
Alien
Jaws

Though I really enjoy the slashers (Friday 13th, Halloween), thrillers (The Vanishing, Cache) and of most any Monster movie. Horror is easily the best genre.

reading this thread i just realised i much prefer the trashy horror b movies. i mean, the silence of the lambs and the shining are great, but that's not really what i'm after. exploding zombies and bad puppet sfx is where it's at.

i've just seen 'from beyond', which in another movie made after an h.p. lovecraft story, and it's fucking great. extra dimensional monsters, body mutations and sm sex scenes. how can it possibly not be great?

OK, Phantasm is not my absolute favorite, but I have too many to mention.
The original Wicker Man.
Ringu, Grudge for recent pleasures.
Rosemary's Baby for a classic.
The Omen (orig.)
The Exorcist
The Ape Man
Brides of Dracula
Old Hammer B-Movies with Christopher Lee as Dracula (a la Dracula Has Risen from the Grave)
old Vincent Price films (The Abominable Dr. Phibes, House of Wax, The Fly)
Boris Karloff, e.g. The Mummy

Village of the Damned
The Others
Pitch Black
The Beast with Five Fingers
Black Sabbath
Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes

Most horror films aren't scary, particularly the schlock horror films, which I love. Some of the films I mentioned are at least creepy.

Any B-Horror works for me.

Evil Dead series, AoD, Night Breed, Candyman, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre *the original*... etc. Lots of Clive Barker.

They are virtually all bore me to sleep wastes of time. I liked Hellraiser, and Phantasm.

Phantasm and Dr Phibes are perennial favorites of mine.

I don't consider slasher movies to be really horror movies, and I don't care for them as much anyway.

We did not always live in hiding. But the Naturals made war on us. They feared us for our strength. They envied our powers. They called us monsters, killing us by whatever means their malice could invent, finding in each of us our particular vulnerability.

None of us was safe. The tribes of the moon dwindled. Our gods were slaughtered, our homes destroyed. It was the Apocalypse.

Only one of our Gods survived the holocaust. Baphomet. Wounded and near death, he summoned us, the last of the last, into hiding. Into Midian, where we wait now. The battle is over but not the war. There will come a saviour. His name is Cabal. He will lead and give us back the Night.

We are the tribes of the moon.

We are the Nightbreed.

*AJ, thats an awesome movie..... one of my favorites. I remember seeing it in a theater and it was quite unique. All the creatures were so well done.
