has anybody here listened to the Pimsleur language courses? they're all about listening and repeating, repeating, repeating. and taking part in conversations. effective for getting off the ground.

i was listening to the french beginners set. over about five hours, it taught me to say "hello, i'm american" and to chat up a french woman and try to get us back to my place or her place for something to eat(!). in lesson 9, i became a sex-pest and i was amazed she didn't call a policeman.

Fun post. How do you define 'own' though? E.g. I couldn't verify whether Rolling Stone is french owned.

I wondered the same thing, especially since I though Universal Music Group was part of Sony/Universal and that many of these companies are probably publicly traded. Apparently the book explains that.

Britain has even more French companies in everyday life.
For some reason, people (including myself), forget that France is an economic powerhouse, and has been for centuries, despite their Continental dirigisme.
Most of those are public companies, and thus can have shareholders anywhere; it probably means where the company (or its largest parent company) is headquartered.

Nissan was bought by Renault.

There are also:
AXA Insurance and advisers
Sanofi-Aventis (which probably makes most of the pharmaceuticals listed)
BNP Paribas is the largest bank in the Eurozone by assets, and owns BancWest
LVMH owns most high luxury brands (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy)
Vivendi started as a water utility but now owns Universal Music, part of NBC, and lots of other things, including water
PPR owns lots of fashion brands and just bought Puma
Alcatel recently bought Lucent and Bell Labs
Alstom built the Queen Mary 2 and a lot of the subway and train cars in NYC and Chicago
Sodexho caters most cafeterias in hotels, universities, and some army bases
Publicis is one of the largest advertising companies in the world (for T-Mobile, Nestle, Whirlpool, Procter&Gambel)
Cap Gemini in consulting and IT
Thomson owns RCA and Technicolor
