What death metal are you listening to revisted...
I made a thread like this a long time ago, and nearly all of my current metal playlist consists of songs and artists that I was introduced to via that thread. Personally, it was a great success, and to this day I enjoy all of this music very much.
And just to prove that your suggestions had an impact, my CURRENT playlist, years later, still includes songs from all of the following groups, who I wouldn't have even known about if it weren't for the asylum:
Amon Amarth
Dimmu Borgir
Dream Theater
In Flames
Lamb Of God
Meshuggah
Opeth
Samael
Strapping Young Lad
The Kovenant
All of these wonderful artists were a gift to me, from you. I mean Opeth is my favorite band now, took the place of Pantera about a year ago (RIP Darryl). Bought the new Opeth album last month, which is an amazing addition to an already masterful work of art. I think Opeth really hit the nail on the head as far as what I was looking for. Yeah I know the "real" metal heads make jokes about Opeth (because they can actually play instruments and compose music?), but that's fine by me because honestly "real" metal is horseshit, imo of course. Soilent Green and Necrophagist don't do much for me, but strangely, rarely, I do occasionally get the itch to listen to them.
Anyways I want to say that the first thread really has had a lasting impact on me, personally, and has really transitioned my playlist to something that I have truly enjoyed. I've tried to keep up on the metal "scene", but there's not really a scene to keep up on. Even when the bigger bands, like Opeth, release albums it's not mainstream in any way, and trying to find who's new and hot on the scene is even harder.
What i'd like this thread to be is, what metal are you really into right now, rather than just what random song are you listening to. So i'll start it off, a friend told me to buy a couple songs from a band called "Bullet For My Valentine". I'm hesitant because in the last thread I broke out "Kitty" about 2 years late, but as far as I can tell this band is still relatively unknown.
The songs I have are:
Bullet For My Valentine: Tears Don't Fall
Bullet For My Valentine: 4 Words To Choke Upon
Not death metal, maybe borderline mainstream. I think both songs are very good, good enough that they're both currently on my playlist. I'd probably compare them to Slipknot if anyone, mellow lyrics with nice screams and some screamy with a little growly choruses, much like Slipknot, but they realy have a totally different style. I really like them.

Metal heads make fun of Opeth? Err.
Anyway.
You need to explore the My Dying Bride catalogue. It's doom/death not at all unlike Opeth. These days I would say start with 'The Light at the End of the World', but they have made so many classics, and personal opinions may vary.
Wintersun is great, if you can handle a bit of cheese.
Katatonia's latest 'The Great Cold Distance' is one of their best, and wins immensely with time.
Absu's 'Tara' is STILL the best occult trash/black metal album in the world. I think I said this last time too.
Limbonic Art's 'In Abhorrence Dementia' is also still the best symphonic black metal album in the world, if you want it a bit sicker than Dimmu Borgir.
For pure Death Metal, go Behemoth, Vader and Nile. Anata are great if you like scandinavian tech.
Anything with Hellhammer on drums. The guy is associated with so much class metal, it's sick.
Oh, and there's one Eclipse - Dorsacharm's Venomous Colours left on amazon. Get it.

lemme first say that for the most part i am *not* a metal fan. too much of it sounds the same and half of the time the singers are really monotonous and just growl through the entire song.
some bands that i've heard lately that you might find enjoyable are Job For a Cowboy and Dragonforce. the first is pretty intense growl-metal, grinding guitars, double bass, all that jazz. all of the metal fans at my store love them to death so you might wanna check it out. right now they only have an EP out (their demo, can you believe it?), but they have a full length CD coming out in May.
Dragonforce is a completely different kind of metal. it's not death metal, but all 6 guys are from black metal bands. you just have to hear it- yeah, it's cheesy but the guys are insanely talented. all of their songs are about defeating dragons and darkness and shit like that. but yeah, for your nostalgic moments you might like it

But that's not music. That's background. It moves with life. And that rules.
