He didn't disappear, he suddenly began spewing long lines of repeated characters, which usually occurs when either the keyboard has fallen face down, or something has fallen on it, like maybe the hand(or hook as the case may be) of an unconscious person. Knowing that he's not in the best of health, and that his son is most likely at work, and not knowing his phone number, I thought it might be nice if someone called him, though he may well be asleep, or not there, and the cat just knocked the keyboard over.
