That was interesting, Paint. I really like the soundtrack, too.

Amen.

That's casualties, however, not combat deaths. Not to minimize the tragedy, but more people died from disease than actual combat, and the figures on that short don't reflect soldiers killed.

Hard to say if they're counting combat deaths or all deaths. The way the figures jump, I'd guess soldiers killed, but I've no way to know for sure.

Incidentally, that short is on a huge video display at the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, IL., apparently.

Just for the record, casualties aren't deaths. The total number of combat deaths in the Civil War was a little over 200,000 for both sides combined. The total number of war deaths for both sides combined was a little over 600,000.

The video is great, mind you. I'm not knocking it. I was just seeking to clarify the comments made about the "death count".

Combat death, or or dying of infection, they still died, in large numbers.

I would imagine that total deaths caused by the war is the main figure of merit for most people.

The music is the theme from Ken Burns' Civil War.

from Wikipedia:

quote:
The theme song of the documentary, "Ashokan Farewell," which was performed for the film by its composer Jay Ungar, became so closely associated with the war thanks to the film that people frequently and erroneously believe it was written and performed during the Civil War.

They should have noted when McClellan was removed from command, but you could pretty much tell when that happened anyways.

pretty impressive video. it was interesting seeing General Sherman's march through Atlanta and Kennesaw Mountain, since i live within walking distance of Kennesaw Mountain

reminds me of this one guy i met a few years ago -- a friend of a friend. he drove a really flashy car, and got pulled over on the interstate coming into atlanta for a vacation. he bragged to a group of us afterwards that in order to get back at the cop who gave him the ticket, he made some comment like "sorry officer. i bet you haven't seen anything burning through atlanta this fast since General Sherman."

The Union had a higher death count than the South. I did not know that. Facinating clip, indeed.

In ROTC Maj. Culver told us it wasn't the civil war but the war of northern aggression. He was your quintisental southern gentleman.
