Let's say I want to learn a new language, perhaps for job positions outside of the US. What would you suggest?

I've considered Chinese, but perhaps there is something even better.

I was told by someone who was Cantonese and wanted to learn mandarin that it's borderline impossible because no matter how hard you try, you'll never quite master the intonation. I've heard Arabic is also insanely hard, but becoming more and more popular. I'd say any UN-recognized language is probably a safe bet if you're thinking of global usefulness. P-mhann, just learn something you'll use... in work or in travels. Where would you like to go?

If Mandarin ends up being too hard (I suspect it will) I think I'm going to take Japanese.

Idaho has the largest Basque population outside of Spain. However it's in southern Idaho. Why they'd want to hang out with mormons is beyond me.

Spanish
French
German
Mandarin

Pick up a slavic language and you'll be able to learn other ones that are similar. Then perhaps Baltic (Lithuanian perhaps) I think it'd be an enormous challenge to learn Japanese or Mandarin though.

There's like 20 million illegal fucking Mexicans in the United States so Spanish would be a cool language to learn. If you venture west you will find that you can actually use this language often. In fact,most jobs that require bilingual would usually be spanish.

A lot of grade school teachers require bilingual.
There are spanish speaking only grade school classes everywhere in grade schools where they have a window of opportunity to absord Engrish into their young little brains.
But nooooo...
It's our own goddam fault they don't need to learn the engrish.
