edit: Oh yea, and I pretty much did this same thing while at Hewitt, on my own, and on a huge mega scale. Thrown into the shitstorm and came out clean. Seriously, if they look at my non-java knowledge and make that a basis for hiring, they're morons. Anyone with a CS degree should be able to pick up java real quick, it's being able to crush all the important stuff that truly matters.
Fair enough. To me, when I run through resumes, if I ask for deep experience in something, it means there should be a deep well of trickery in that particular subject, not something that is close so you can learn the needed skill.
I guess it makes me a moron, but I have hired quite a stack of consultants that made my customers happy. Consulting is different from in-house work in that you really don't want to spend a lot of time ramping someone up. You want to get them slightly comfortable with the time billing system, the peculiarities of your offerings, and the expensing systems. Then, you want to toss them in front of customers and start billing hours.
I hope they take you on, it'll be a good experience for you. Maybe they have a program that would let you do some back end work for consultants presently working a large deal, and get you up to speed that way.
Good luck with it.
