The Sound Of Distant Drums

I'll start of with Bernard Purdie

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NQ0...related&search=

So, who is the greatest drummer of all time?

You tube, Google video, whatever you have..

Let's debate who is the greatest drummer of all time...

GO!

Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band is one of my favorites.

It's cliche, but John Bonham. I'll get a video once youtube gets unlocked here at work.

Simon Phillips, the best drummer you've heard, but never heard of.

A list of some of the people he's drummed for reads like a who's who in rock, jazz and pop.

Nazareth
801
Phil Manzanera
Brian Protheroe
Albert Hammond
Jack Bruce
Judas Priest
Bonnie Tyler
Duncan Browne
David Coverdale
Gary Moore
Art Garfunkel
Pete Townshend
Roxy Music
Michael Schenker
Stanley Clarke
Mike Rutherford
Jon Anderson
Jeff Beck
Camel
Mike Oldfield
Mick Jagger
Whitesnake
Joe Satriani
The Who
Peter Gabriel
Gil Evans
The Pretenders
Tears for Fears
Big Country
The Orb
Roger Daltrey
Brian Eno
The Corrs
Ian Gillan
Al DiMeola
Steve Vai
Jordan Rudess

This one's at a clinic in 2004
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGcKwYuRBQg

And twenty years earlier at a Zildjian clinic in 1985
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t0l...related&search=

And here with jazz drumming great Louis Bellson which evolves into a great drumming duet.

I'll catch hell for this, but I always liked to hear Nick Mason play.

Sometimes when the wind is right and grouse fly aimlessly like small ill-fated zeppelins into the windows of communism, Rokkr shows a glimmer of something I like to call the "Let's not drop his butchered remains into a telephone post hole dug last night by the utility crew that didn't have time to fill with a creosote saturated wooden pole until tomorrow" sort of personality.

But if I had to pick just one, it would be Buddy Rich.

Just for the record, so far I win. Rokkr is at a distant second, and the rest of you are grasping at straws. Straws I tell you!

eeew, bite your tongue. the drummer is older than I am.

Meanwhile, I could give you a whole list of cool, crazy drummers, but mine isn't around to advise.

Hmm, Levon Helm, Tony Allen, Buddy Rich, Ginger Baker, Elvin Jones, Neil Peart, Gene Krupa, and Keith Moon are some names I've heard mentioned. I've also seen some crazy drumming videos (yes, he makes me watch them) by various folks whose names escape me.

I'll be back with links to crazy drum and percussion solos, because you have nothing better to do . . .

Oops, the drummer makes fun of Neil Peart (got that wrong), but likes Charlie Watts.

Great drummer no one's heard of: Tiki Fulwood of Funkadelic.

He's still dropping names but I've already tuned him out. If you really care, I'll give you his number and you can call him, or you can go harass him at drumforum.org.
