i made a video

yes, i did. lacking musical inspiration, i figured i'd try and make a music video for my nachtzug tune.

it took me about half an hour to find some train footage in the public domain and then about 2 hours to edit it all together. it's not much but there you have it.

That was cool. Really...

But, for some reason...it seems like a ...a...ummm...well it suggested to me...a subliminal Viagra commercial. I'm fine, so it must be you.

Good music, but the video doesn't do much for me.

I like the Nachtzug tune. The music is naturally repetitive, so it might help if the video weren't so, but it was interesting to look at.

I just can't seem to find the inspiration to write music anymore. Which is bad, because when I've put my mind to it in the past the results have always been good.

Maybe I'm getting old....

Inspiration to me, plays a huge factor in creating and writing music. I loved music the first day my good friend showed a triplet pattern he composed on his Tom Sequential drum machine when I was 14. From that moment and when the acid scene arrived in the UK I was hooked. It consumed my life. In the past I've put out over 40 12 inch records and was sucked into a world of music technology.

I even turned the skills into a trade and built many a recording studio.

that's true enough. but i find that sometimes i just need to sit down and start writing and when i hit that first vibe that just works, it simply goes form there. it's a feedback loop for me, if that first groove is good, everything else just works.

although, lately, i've had pretty much complete tunes in my head and the only problem was getting the machine to make the sounds that i want. that's been the greatest obstacle for me, if the sound isn't what i want it to be i can't continue with anything else and i'm fairly certain that's not a good thing. it does get easier when you have the right hardware though.

What does your rig consist of then?

I used to have racks of equipment. But now I just run with Logic Audio and Reason 3 running on a dual G4...

What else do you need?

just a virus c and the emu 6400 ultra with the rfx card. the thing is, nothing ever comes close to the emu filters and electronic music has always been about filters. the only problem i have with soft synths is that their filters suck. all of them. the reason why a lot of electronic music today sounds so bland is that everyone uses software and it just sounds too thin.

what really amuses me is that releases from 5 - 10 years ago have better sound design and also fuller sound than most of today's. people just got too lazy to fuck around with hardware. it's just too practical to click save and everything will be the same next time you want to work on it.

For any non-Islamo-Nazis who don't speak German, "Nachtzug" means "night train."

Not bad, dogcow, but that tune was like listening to a dial tone on a bad connection.
