I am unsure of the history behind the saying, but it was common amongst the older men in my Dad's family. Do something they did not approve of and you'd hear, "Look out, you keep that up and I'll be on you like a duck on a junebug!"

I've heard (and sadly said) many of those things. The "your hair looks like a rat's nest," was something said to me pretty regularly- into my thirties, which is part of the reason I cut most of it off- that and my dad was dead and I couldn't piss him off any more by keeping it long. I'm all over my kids about slamming the screen door, too. I have, however, given my wife permission to excuse the boys from the table. Next year, I might even let her decide who to vote for on her own.

And after reading that list i would not assume that your people were stupid or uneducated, but then again, I'm only one generation off the farm, myself.
