I was quite keen on Thompson early on, but the more time goes on, the more he looks to me like a big old fake, just a bullshitter.

He's got to be better than Rudy Giuliani, however. Thompson has a few problems, it seems to me -- his sympathy for trial lawyers (which doesn't bother me a great deal), his reputation for being lazy and his possibly newfound propensity to talk utter shit for dramatic effect (that nonsense about losing more men in the cause of others' freedom, for example, which was well-dissected on the blogs). I'd take him over Romney as well as Giuliani and I'd prefer him to Hillary Clinton (a Giuliani-Clinton election would leave me wishing that they could both lose).

I formerly thought that nearly any serious candidate would beat Hillary Clinton, but the more it goes on, the tougher she looks, despite all her obvious problems. Her campaign is a machine.

My favoured Republicans, though, are John McCain and Ron Paul, in that order. Thompson might be third. I'd probably prefer Obama to Giuliani or Huckabee and Clinton and Giuliani are about joint last in my preferences. Of course, I don't get to vote.

I am afraid that you are oh so right. Hillary looks like a shoo-in for the Democrats and I think that Thompson is not picking up nearly the speed he needs to win the nomination. Faced with a Hillary vs Fred choice I will vote for Fred in a minute but I am not happy with Thompson since he announced and like you I doubt that he will make it. If it is Giuliani vs Hillary I will reluctantly vote for Rudy. I too would vote for Ron Paul but he hasn't got a chance. Oh well! Obama vs Giuliani preferable to Hillary vs Rudy and I might just possibly vote for Obama but it would depend on what happens between now and then.
