Large vocabulary isn't a display of education or positive personal quality. It's a sign of pretension. The only reason someone would intentionally use obscure and uncommon words is as yet another way to make others look and feel stupid.

I disagree. Use of proper terminology allows much more precise statements to be made. Often, one well chosen word can say better what one might otherwise expend a paragraph on approximating.
