STEPHENSON,, GEORGE BERRY George Berry Stephenson was born May 7, 1938 in Gainesville, Texas to the late Gwen and George Walter Stephenson and died February 7th in Gainesville. He attended Oklahoma University and earned his BFA degree at the University of Texas at Austin. He furthered his education at Art Center School in Los Angeles, and then began a twenty year career as a graphic designer. Later he became Executive Director and a Substance Abuse Counselor with the Ethel Daniels Foundation. His personal struggles and accomplishments with Alcoholics Anonymous were traits that he drew upon and were of immeasurable help to those he counseled. An accomplished artist, the Dallas community has enjoyed Georges art at various exhibits at Cathedral of Hope and other venues in the Dallas area. He was also an avid bridge player and enjoyed many Tuesday bridge nights at Cathedral of Hope. The neighborhood will miss the familiar site of George and his beloved dogs riding through town with the top down in his convertible. He is survived by his daughter: Amy Judith Stephenson of Austin, former wife: Patsy Stephenson and close friends: Don Williamson, Leslie Johnson, Tom Wood, Wayne T. McCall, David Duncan, Lynn Street, John Politis and a host of friends from AA and the Oak Lawn community. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, February 14th at Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Road, Dallas. A reception with family and friends will follow. Interment will be at 12 Noon Friday in Valley View Cemetery, Valley View (between Denton and Gainesville). Flowers or donations to Alcoholics Anonymous will be appreciated. Condolences may be placed at www.legacy.com. Forest Lawn, Dallas, Texas 214 953.0363 Services provided through North Dallas F.H.
Service wasn't bad. They had a viewing beforehand. He looked terrible, but he'd been in an icebox for a week, so I didn't expect much. I didn't go to the graveside service on Friday up in Gainesville. David said it only lasted eighteen minutes, and I was about funeraled out at that point. I'm looking for a new sponsor right now, but I'm not trying to replace George.
I heard yesterday that the Dallas Voice has printed a story using the killer as their source and spreading the most salacious details of George's death. I'll have to pick up a copy and see if that is true. It is unfortunate, but doesn't change anything about George's life. I just hate to see that sort of thing take place.
