My parents owned and operated a mail-order fabric business for many years. If I am not mistaken "unbleached domestic" refers to unbleached cotton muslin, oviously produced here in the US. The bleached variety was used for production of calico fabric and other cotton goods. The unbleached muslin was often used for other purposes such as grain and coffee bags, etc.
So, Oxan, you all were wearing sackcloth on your ashes.
