heh - I voted for a liberal Democrat for president this year. That makes me scratch my head.
But, the guy is smart, he's purdy, he's soft-spoken, but looks like he can stiffen his spine if he needs to. After researching him I have to think that he's more of a pragmatist than an ideologue. He's going to try and do the "right" things - as long as they're doable.
I wanted to be part of a "historic" vote, but Palin would have satisfied that urge (had she not proved to be such a fucking dickhead). I wouldn't have voted for him if he hadn't impressed me. He did. I hope he can stay above the slime line. It's tough for any politician to do, but we can always hope.
I feel your pain. I grew up where "Conservative" was the watchword, and "Liberal" was synonymous with evil, corruption and societal demise. Yet, there are "Progressive" goals that I find myself quite in favor of.
It's odd. I think you're good the way you are, but never stop questioning, eh?

The problem with "conservatives", politically speaking, comes down to religion. Take religion out of the equation and it's suddenly not so bad. Religion poisons the right on any issue involving civil rights, science, education, sex, laws, even national security and defense.
They need to stop being the god party and start being the conservative party again. Secularism is good.

No one hates the church more than me but they have it right on all those issues because they see the connections between every form of degeneracy and decline.
They tell people about a bearded guy on a cloud because they despair of people ever actually being bright enough to see that our society needs identity, ethics, stable relationships, codified behaviour and a strong military in order to survive.

I don't disagree with you necessarily, but I would point out two things:
1. So-called "religious conservatives" are often neither--the news is full of preachers caught in gay sex scandals while stealing money from the congregation.
2. Plenty of secularists have done fucked up things so it's not like religion is the source of all evil, and secularism the cure.
I think you need to recognize that people can be sanctimonious pricks without being whatever you think of as "conservative." There are probably plenty of "conservatives" that you would agree with on a great many issues. One of the reasons they don't get solved is because people get hung up on ideas like "I'm a democrat and that means I have to do this" or "I'm a republican and that means I have to do this other."
Just sayin'.

the idea that all conservatives are religious tightwads is amazing, I don't always agree with their values, but do you really have pigeonhole them as grey haired harridans?
talk to the nearest hippie you see and tell them you don't believe in global warming. nevermind you don't believe it, watch, they're just as indignant as the religious folk about their beliefs. do you look down on them?
why not? are their beliefs less believable then theirs?
people are always judgmental, how else can you consider you're own response?

Global warming is based on science and fact, religion is myth and superstition. Which should we legislate on?
Of course all conservatives are not bible thumping fanatics, nobody said that, but the parties whole platform is tainted by religious ideals. The areas where it is not are the only areas where it is rational (as straightman pointed out, financial responsibility and personal responsibility).
