Don't feel guilty ... he was in your house with a gun, he would have killed you without remorse if he saw you first, and maybe your family.
Heavy shit...... but you did the right thing an protected you family.
The most shocking thing for me is I thought you were gay. I'm rubbish at this forum.

I don't think anything in my post would indicate that I am not gay.

My hopes and dreams are smashed.

I'm going to cry myself to sleep now.

What happened after the police turned up?
In the UK, you'd be looking at 15 years imprisonment!

The guy seemed to be surprised that I had shot an intruder. I don't know what the dispatcher had told him.
He asked for my weapon and I unloaded it and handed it to him. That seemed to upset him a little. He informed me that it was too much for home security.
Shortly after I let the policeman in the door, the wife came out of the bedroom and screamed. She was actually complaining about the mess and asking the policeman who had to clean it*.
The ambulance and about five more squads cars arrived at the same time. One EMT checked me out while the other one went inside to check on the body.
I was speaking to police the majority of the time, and was in the front yard when the gurney came out of the house. By this time, neighbors were lined up in the adjacent yards trying to get a look. I never spoke to any of them about it.
I found out later that the guy had PCP in his system. And they never found out who the other guy was.
As for UK, you'd be looking at life. Or the lack of it. In a pine box.
* Turns out you have to pay a hazmat crew to clean it up. We re-deco'd the kitchen shortly after that.

Dude I don't think I can live in that house any more. Are you still there?
But then again I bet burglars don't bother you after that if you had stayed.

Yup.
It had to have been on the news though or in the paper.

In Dallas? It barely made the papers, and no TV crews showed up. I was never mentioned by name, nor was the body.
We sold the house (because we couldn't afford it) that August for about 20K less than it would have been worth otherwise. Luckily, we still made enough to pay off most of our debt.

Hell of a thing, fubar. I won't tell you not to feel guilty - you are guilty. Guilty of doing the correct thing to protect your family, to whom you owe vastly more than any stranger, especially one invading your home with malicious intent.
I hope you can sleep very well.

Guns kill, from a .22 to a Magnum. How can he say it's "too much for home security", is there a less lethal gun he hasn't told you about!

I was raised by a cop and hunted religiously. I grew up with and around guns. I have firsthand experience with what different calibre rounds do to thin-skinned animals (and humans are just that).
I had been leery of using that particular gun for home defense just because I thought that if I had to use it, I might wind up killing my next door neighbor as well. Maybe a 9mm or .40 cal would have been better.
Considering what the guy had in his system, a smaller round like those would likely have gotten me shot. Hell, considering how much damage a .44 round did, it only knocked him out for a few seconds before he was able to gather his senses and use his arms to move around the kitchen.
I honestly don't think the cop had ever fired a weapon before he joined the force, and had probably never drawn his weapon in the line of duty.

I've checked the ad twice since you posted this, and both times it has come up as Trivial Pursuit.
I think the ether is trying to tell me something.
