I know all kinds of homeless, know one guy in Austin Texas that lives in the woods and works at a academy sporting goods store. he makes minimum wage and cant afford a house in a decent hood. Just a few minuets ago I was asked by a publix employ here in Atlanta if I knew of a rooming house because he cant afford his rent and he cant always get to his home because of the public transit here sucks and ends up sleeping on the streets on nights when he has to close. What dose a homeless man look like? All any one ever sees is the homeless guy at the buss stop like I was talking about in another post and unfortunately that was a true story. A local hospital just turned two mentally deranged men out on to the bus stop yesterday. I know a lot of guys that live in a shelter and work but for some reason or another can not find or afford housing. I my self have a hard time finding work in the winter months and housing because of a large gap in my work history and a lack of stability from choosing to travail with carnivals for years now and I have a less than perfect record. You don't always have to follow the trail of piss up the side walk to find a homeless person although that is the easiest way to do it here in Atlanta. Most states back in 2002 made a ten year plan to end homelessness I have read a lot of the plans and find that they are no more than smoke and mirrors documents to pacify the HUD department or other government entities in to thinking that something is going to be done. But when the truth on the streets is a lot different. I been homeless all across this nation, I have lived on La's skid row, and San Francisco in golden gate park. I have lived on 6th street in Austin Texas and on the streets of Portland Maine, and Minneapolis, Rochester Mn. And thats just to name a few. A good percent of the homeless population is mentally ill or have severe addictions. Another good percent are coming out of foster care or other state institutions like prison. All because you have committed a crime you may have paid your due, but society still dose not see it that way. A lot of the homeless just lack the ability to make a living wage. And more and more on the streets are single people without support systems that lose their jobs. There is one program I have seen here in Ga that puts you to work for a company for six weeks and pays you one hundred dollars a week every other week. Your pay is I believe picked up by the state and the company get to decided if they want to keep you at the end of the six weeks. I have already heard of companies working the people like dogs for the six weeks and letting them go. Only to pick another six week employee. I have seen a few systems that work and a lot more that don't .
If you where to see me you would never know that I was homeless I keep a very nice leather L.L.Bean backpack I have a laptop. I have on clean clothes and new shoes and a new coat which I have bought with my own money. I do not panhandle although I have had to before to feed myself in the past. I am not a drug addict nor am I an alcoholic. And I work when ever I can right now I have physical problems that prevent me from doing a lit of things but I still do them and pay for it latter. Any way You would not know that I was homeless until I told you that I was. I am not a new kind of homeless, people like me and the guy you met have always been here. But most people only see one face of homeless and therefor think all the faces are the same. This is not true I wish I could afford a camera I could show you the face of homelessness and believe me there are a lot of different ones. Some just down on their luck and others just down on their life.
A female friend of mine slept outside in her regular cab pickup truck for a couple months because her shit hole of an apartment was infested with the nastiest bed bugs. She worked as a manager at the local McDonalds, but slept each night in her apartment's parking lot.
Tex I love you and your stories but as a smoker you gotta know that I can't read this shit without paragraphs.
