what do you want to be?

what do you want to do with your life? i mean seriously. are you doing it now? what are you doing now to get yourself to that point? is this the same career you chose when you were in high school? how have your choices changed since then?

i wanted to be a teacher when i graduated high school. but, due to extenuating circumstances within my family, i opted to leave college to take care of some stuff. now, i love the job that i have and want to move up in the company, be a district manager, or a management trainer. i like to teach, and this would give me the opportunity to do so.

I'm in school right now... Exactly where I expected to be. I'm not sure where I'm going (I've explained this at length, elsewhere, some time ago) but I'm not that worried about it. Despite constant plans of what to do, I've never really thought beyond school. It is my life right now, and I can't imagine the time when I'll finally be done with it.

I want to be able get my work published. I really enjoy writing and painting and would love to be paid for it. Though, if I could live out my dreams I'd be a paleoarcheologist. Either that or the thong straightner at the tittie bar.

I am doing what I want right now, just not at the level I'd like to be at. Engaging students on a daily basis, working on my own scholarship and writing, and having the time to do other things, like work with animals, is what I've wanted to do all my life. I just didn't have a particular career picked out that would let me do it.

When I was young I thought I had to be a housewife to have any time to myself. As I got older I learned that housewives rarely have time for themselves, no matter what the financial circumstance.

I wish I had had an earlier role model...it would have made the choice come along a little quicker. But I've learned a lot along the way, having tried out several other options that did not work. I know about other jobs, other lifestyles, other points of view; to a degree, I've kept myself out of the "ivory tower." What more can I ask for, aside from more money (less than $10k a year just doesn't cut it) and to be in a better position to affect change?

These words written by Danny Elfman have taken up residence in my mind from the time I first heard them years ago as a child. Yeah, I wanted to be just like the charasmatic characters on T.V., just like the cool kids and just like the 22 minute long sitcoms where everything turns out okay. I was young. I was stupid. I was never any of those things. As I grew older, I began to realize the error of these ways. I'm glad I came to the realization. I'm no longer trying to get the most popularity votes, no longer trying to be part of the "in" crowd. Now, I am on my way to being one of the best high school English teachers this nation has ever seen. I don't say that out of arrogance, I say it from confidence in my education and my ability to share it with others. I stopped going for the lawyer thing because I didn't see how it would be helpful. I am doing something to change the world, one classroom at a time. And though you may not see things as I do, you have not seen things through my eyes. Come visit my classroom sometime, you'll see the world getting better little by little.
