The fuck you Navy fighter jet crash into old people home close to a school thread

Commander Rosi with the Navy said two aircrew safely ejected from the plane that was based in Oceana. Both pilots have been taken to a nearby hospital, according to reports from the scene.
Witnesses say two apartment buildings near the crash site are on fire, and rescue workers are searching for potential casualties. Military police is also on site. Interstate 264 has been closed down. Thick black smoke can be seen rising from the scene.
A spokesperson from the Virginia Fire department has told reporters the fire has been contained. Reports about potential casualties are conflicting, as some people say at least one person was carried out on a stretcher from one of the apartment buildings that caught on fire after the crash. Beach General Hospital has also reportedly confirmed both pilots and five civilians were being treated for injuries, but nothing was known about the severity of their condition so far.
One of the first peope on the scene told CBS news that he helped move one of the pilots to a safe distance from the blaze. According to the witness, the pilot was conscious and apologized profusely for crashing into the apartment complex.
Reports also suggest at least one apartment building has burnt down completely. Overall, at least 5 buildings and 20 apartment units have been affected by the fire.
Several people have also claimed the fighter jet was seen dumping fuel just before the crash, in order to avoid an explosion upon impact.

Man. The only thing worse than falling out of the sky is falling out of the sky and hitting someone else when you come down. Those pilots should have ridden the damned thing in, trying every possible thing to avoid homes right up until impact.

My friend that lives really close to there has an uncle and an aunt that's less than a block away. The word is that the jet malfunctioned upon takeoff and the pilots had only seconds to dump the fuel and eject. They never had the time to steer away from anything because they were too low off the ground.

Well if your controls don't lift the jet what more can you do?
Apparently the conscious pilot is beyond sorry. I really do think they did everything they can.

I'm sure they had a perfectly good reason for being out and about.

Looking at that picture I can practically guarantee they in fact did NOT do everything they could. Dumping fuel takes at least a few seconds to initiate. Had those few seconds been spent turning the aircraft even a few degrees too the left they quite likely, from the track angle, have missed the buildings entirely. Which is absolutely a higher priority than saving their sorry asses.

Why are people surprised when planes crash? Throw enough of them up in the air and eventually one will slam into the ground. That's just the way it is.

Funny, when I did mine, we didn´t spend a lot of time covering ejecting from a multi-million dollar jet.

I also never really touched on what occurs in a situation where your high performance jet becomes unresponsive and how to run through a ditch-list.
My course was shit, all I had to deal with was a single piston engine in my PPL.

The cunts at the JAA never told me I could get all the type ratings in the world by passing my PPL alone, assholes, I could be flying space shuttle now and never knew it.

There was an interview with a pilot yesterday, he said a fighter without an engine is about as manoeuvrable as a flying brick, 20 meters one way, 20 meters to the other is about all you'll get.

In addition to that, when those jets (any plane for that matter) slow to stall speeds, they are bricks unless high enough to fall nose down and pick up enough speed to glide.

It seems people lived in the perfect world before these planes crashed, and now a veil has been removed from their eyes. Jesus, save these sheep right the fuck now.
They shouldn't be flying in the first place. Their existence is a mockery of life and intelligence. This was probably a good thing.

Look at the track angle in the photo. Twenty meters to the left would have put it into the cleared ground and trees behind the first building struck. Certainly, if the aircraft was at stall just before impact, it was unmanueverable, and again from that photo, that may have been the case.

Much like the pilot in San Diego a year or so ago, the available visible evidence suggests that abandoning the aircraft contributed to the impact site. Which makes doing so inexcusable.

If your instructors never addressed your responsibility as a pilot to do everything in your power to avoid hitting structures on the ground they were sorely remiss in their duties as instructors.

"Everything in your power" includes riding the bitch down if that is what it takes.

Update. With all the destruction three are missing.
Yes. Only three.
Not to say that there was only three deaths, but there was only three deaths.
They pretty much lucked out it seems,or they really did everything they can.

All Accounted for In Jet Crash
All the residents of a Virginia Beach apartment complex have been accounted on Saturday, one day after an F-18 fighter jet slammed into the complex. Officials said a “catastrophic mechanical malfunction” caused the Navy jet to crash, and crash and subsequent explosion damaged five buildings. The two pilots, who suffered minor injuries, ejected the plummeting jet from a low altitude.

Given that it was a PPL and not a navy/airforce combat jet type rating, we did not cover ejecting. I'll let them know that their course needs adjustment.

In any case, unless equipped with a rescue parachute, the Samba XL and many other aircraft used in PPL training expect and in many cases force you to "ride the bitch down".

But given what occurs when you practice stall recovery, you know that when you experience a departure, anything can happen with regards to the direction and position you find yourself having to counter.

Imagine if you will, your aircraft is going down in a controlled manner and all things indicate that you can eject or bail and the craft will crash beyond/short/to the side of a populated area.
So, you bail or eject, while you float down under your own rescue you notice that you are experiencing turbulence caused by substantial thermal activity. You then watch your aircraft flying fairly straight and level and then wing overs as its one wing rides an updraft. You are hanging there remembering that you set the trim to keep the maximum glide, but the aircraft is now inverted or semi-inverted. What do you think it is going to do, when trimmed to best glide upright, while upside down?

You did everything right and got fingered by fate. And, that is only one of 50 things that can ruin a controlled rescue. Now imagine 500 things that can ruin your day in an uncontrolled free-fall.

I cannot speak to his training, or any instruction received, but thinking that this type of crash can be avoided so easily is just daft and shows how little he knows in actuality.
