LF just told me about this while I'm on the phone. I seriously didn't know. TT is a mainstay much like LF, SS, and Mugtoe among others. I won't get too sappy here, but I truly will pray for him tonight. He needs to recover so he can continue to make us irate, laugh, and humble to his wisdom. Unfortunately, no significant changes as of last evening. Still running an intermittent, spiking fever, still on antibiotics, still has to use the ventilator. Digestive system apparently shut down again (probably due to the pancreastic damage). Kidneys and liver functioning well, BP and heart fine.

He's still on massive doses of pain killers and only periodically conscious and lucid.

There are some options being considered. First, they have to knock down the recurrent, spiking fever. Two possibilities there: 1) infection, with toxins causing the fever response; and 2) necrosis in the pancreas releasing toxins that are driving it. Both possibilities are being addressed, by draining necrostic fluids from the pancreas, the infection by intravenous antibiotics.

The continued need for a ventilator to maintain blood oxygen levels is a major problem for making a long term prognosis. They are slowly decreasing the oxygen feed while monitoring blood oxygen - if his lungs can pick up the load to maintain normal levels, they will remove the ventilator. The seciond major impediment is the recurrent shut down of his digestive system - which can have various causes related to the damage to the pancreas.

If they can get him stable, infection free, and breathing normally, the possibilities get wider. The rehabilitation process is likely to be lengthy and difficult, with an ongoing need for medical monitoring and medication to manage without a significantly functioning pancreas.

Once stable, he may be moved to a chronic care facility. His wife has returned to her work on a part-time basis, mostly because two weeks of nothing but constant stress and worry about him have really worn her down. Work is a relief, in some ways.

His life has dramatically changed. Assuming survival, it will never return to what it was, and the limitations are going to chafe at him enormously.

Addendum: Info just received. A CAT scan today shows bubbles of gas forming in the necrotic pockets in his pancreas, which is a certain sign of bacterial infection there. Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning to remove most, if not all, of the remaining pancreas tissues, and likely his gall bladder as well. His fever spiked to 105 today.
