I think the key, at least in the websites I've visited isn't so much what you tell but how you tell it.

People want to be entertained dammit. If the reason puce is your favorite color is funny then people will read on....

Don't take yourself too seriously.

I'm more interested in a person's history so that I may better understand where they are comming from and why they are the way they are, what they say, they do, they think, they act, etc.

Just try to be interesting... most people actually are if they sit down and think about it... what is unique about your perspective (without getting too heady or long winded)... should be about things you find interesting and why you find them interesting.... maybe then people who visit your site will also find those same things interesting.

All about presentation really.
