It really depends, if I'm in the studio and I manage to find a radio, I tune into an oldies station. At home, I tend to listen to electronic music or jazzy stuff. Or sometimes just some PiL or Cibo Matto.

It helps sometimes, keeps me company and puts me in a good mood. Defintely helps in the middle of class.

I suppose it influences it in a way, especially my web stuff, as some of it is inspired my music I listen to

I listen to Aphex Twin.. usually the only times when I do and it's good when I do my papers too.. sounds odd.. but the lack of lyrics actually helps me when I'm thinking lol
probably because it stops me from singing along

It's weird, when I am drawing something I will sometimes listen to music, but mainly because it drowns out other distractions. When I get in a really creative mood I get this big energy burst and sometimes music helps that.

I'm with Datura, I always listen to music when I write, but sometimes, especially if it is new, lyrics mess me up. You'd think I'd get around to owning more electronica and classical.

But after having nearly worn out a CD, the lyrics kind of become the music, or rather my mind doesn't activly focus on them as much, and I am okay.

I used to religiously listen to the 9th symphony whenever I was writing anything. Wore out that CD though.

I usually listen to music while creating. The measures and rhythms help to subversively structure my thoughts without influencing them too much.

Tool, Mr. Bungle, pavement, Rage, Radiohead, Philip Glass = Writing. Depends on the mood I want to set for the piece. If I go eclectic, I choose bungle or pavement. If I want an introspective piece I try tool or radiohead. I’m sure that you all know what RATM is good for. Philip is around for nostalgic reasons.

Radiohead, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Jane’s Addiction, Mad Season = Acoustic and Electric Guitar inspiration. Radiohead mostly. Thom Yorke chooses the most interesting chord changes and patterns. Interesting shit which influences the work and composition that I do. Jane’s Addiction’s Dave Navarro is fucking brilliant when it comes to simplicity and effective sound, truly a great rhythm guitarist and possibly my biggest musical inspiration. The rest are just for a few sound and mood things that I dig. Alice In Chains and Mad Season for mood. Nothing beats a little heroin rock coming out of Layne Staley and Mike McReady/Jerry Cantrell.

I listen to a lot of music while playing with my graphics. It depends on my mood when I'm doing stuff.. it does sometimes influence the outcome, though more often the music is set based on the mood of the piece.

Sometimes I listen to stuff without words, sometimes it just fades into the background.. it depends. I've found myself more distracted by some music without lyrics than music with lyrics.

This got more responses than I expected.

I seemed to do my best work to the Doors. I'm not sure why. It could be all the pot I smoke when I write. Of course the drugs could also be why I can't seem to get anything published.

While I'm printing I need something without vocals... usually Charles Mingus or Ornet Coleman... sometimes even a little Sun Ra... depends on how much sleep I've had.

While throwing clay I listen to really aggressive music... At the Drive In or Quicksand or Deftones.

While drawing or painting I listen to everything from R.L. Burnside to Flaming lips to Mahler.

Music definately effects your mood, which in turn effects the creative process... it's all about what stokes your fire in specific situations. Of course, we've all be driving down the road, listening to something interesting, and suddenly feel the urge to endager our lives and the lives of other drivers in an attempt to find something to write on before a specific inspiration slips through our mental fingers. Inspiration is funny that way... less about engineering a creative enviornment and more about realizing that your own life in the basis of most of your creative work, so if you lead an interesting life, you'll be more likely to be able to conjure up interesting visions at random moments.

At any rate, I'm babbling...
I jerk off to Mr. Bungle... that's pretty inspiring.

just recently i am trying to draw again, and i find myself listening to alot of trance/techno

but i listen to hip hop mostly, but i draw and tend not to write. there isn't much conflict there

but when i am caught up in my work, it really wouldn't matter, i could put on a cd and realize that it was almost at the end of it when i am done with the sketch/piece im working on

I listen to music when I do anything creative. Just now I got headphones so i can finally use my precious brainwave generator. Music sounds so much better through headphones. nine inch nails - closer, thats a whole different song through headphones compared to speakers(that are near each other)

I create beautiful music on the piano.

Hmmm...what do I listen to while doing this??

I have no idea. This concept is much too out of reach.

It helps get me in the right frame of mind to convey the emotional impact I want to make. I don't need to have music on. It can help.... but it's not nessary.

Question Artists and various creative types...

Do you listen to music while creating? Anything in particular? Or just whatever happens to be on? Does it help? Does it affect the spirit and/or mood of your work?

What ever matches the mood I’m in.

Does it help?

Sometimes.

Does it affect the spirit and/or mood of your work?

Always. Especially when I paint while I’m tripping, which I haven’t done since I became prego and wont do while I’m mommy.

Cool

Well, I don't really consider myself creative, but when I write (even for school) I will listen to various types of music, sometimes the same few songs/pieces over and over. I listen to Clannad (Celtic), U2, Classical (Bach mainly) and old rock from the 60's and 70's. I think it helps me, I seem to need distraction to write.
