Post Posting and Threads: What's up?

O.k., we seem to have tamed down for the most part on this recently, and I will admit my own periodic guilt here, but I'd still like to talk about this, and see what everyone else's thoughts are.

A number of people frequently go into serious threads, or interesting ones, and just post random crap that attracts others to do the same. We've all done it at one point, so no finger pointing. But I have to ask if this is really fair to the original poster? O.k., cry me a river, you're saying. But still...

There are certainly enough silly topics to romp through, so why can't we all limit our bullshit there?

I've noticed a lot of cases too where people have asked other people to look in other threads where topics have already been covered, rather than redirecting a thread. To me, this seems perfectly valid; why jump on their ovum or balls about it? But that's what happens. THey get attacked.

Maybe I'm just taking life too seriously, or I'm completely out of whack with the majority.

I already eluded to this in another post, but what the hell.

Lay off the damn quote function, jackasses. You don't need to QUOTE someone's entire 7 page paragraph when you are going to add a single-lined reply, for christ's sake. In fact, you rarely need to quote anyone unless you are replying to many, many people over a period of time which might not be as condusive to the continuity of the conversation. If I ask you a question, you sure as hell don't have to quote it back to me - I'm well aware of what I asked. If you can't answer your question in a fashion which would indicate to me the intended recipient of your reply, perhaps you should put a little more time into it's construction.

Everytime I see a quote box that fills up the entire screen I fight the uncontrollable urge to pull out my own teeth.

Wraith, that one only bothers me when all they do is add a smiley face or repost a long series of graphics. Oh, then there's the old I'll-just-repost-what-they-said-and-not-add-anything-of-my-own.

I rarely feel the urge to pull out my own teeth though. Maybe other people's.

bunkum,

For the most part, the usage I've seen of the quote feature is hideous. A single thread may scroll several pages ONLY because 1/2 of the content is eaten up in MULTIPLE quotes (and re-quotes) of the same damn information.

And many of us agree, however, insulting people isn't going to change anyone's behavior. Asking them, whenever it is bothering you to change the quote to indicate the exact line or line's that they're responding to might work though.

There is absolutly nothing wrong with using the quote function. That's why it's there. If you don't like it that's your problem.

Bunkum, I agree. Sometimes people feel the need to add utter bullshit to threads when they have nothing to add to the topic at hand. Why post then? To add up your total post count? Big deal. Sure we have all been guilty of adding shit to posts from time to time. All I know is I try to limit myself. If I don't have anything to add, I don't. It's fairly simple. There are threads that get started that are for fucking around. Why not just leave those posts for those threads? Oh well...

The Wraith-

There is hardly any difference in quoting what someone said and using speech marks and the bold function as you do on many occasions.

Although using their every sentence individually does help to strengthen your arguments I suppose.

when i used to work on the computer for a living, the last thing i wanted to do when I got off work was get on the computer.

I can't believe after a long day scanning forums you wouldn't be so tired of them that you would bother coming here. Maybe you just need a dog to kick.

Your complaint seems to be that these forums aren't providing anything new. Your critique in and of itself is nothing new. It only contributes to the same-old, same-old feel of it.

I'd rather see you post something about your hobbies or personal experiences offline. But I realize you're just going to respond to this in your usual form, rehashing the material and asking for an elaboration. Don't they make chat bots that could do that for you, automating the process and leaving you with more free time to scan more carbon-copy forums?

"There is hardly any difference in quoting what someone said and using speech marks and the bold function..."
There's some big differences. I take the time and interest in cutting out EXACTLY what I'm replying to rather than lazily click a damn button. You know I've read your post fully and have the dignity to address your issues in a very attentive manner. The second difference is it takes up MUCH less space.

"I can't believe after a long day scanning forums you wouldn't be so tired of them that you would bother coming here."
What makes you think I do that for a living? I don't work for Infopop.

"you just need a dog to kick."
That's not amusing. That's not funny. I don't appreciate the assumption I need to engage in animal cruelty to elviate your concern over what I do in my evenings.

"Your complaint seems to be that these forums aren't providing anything new."
No, not at all. That's not my complaint. I don't have a complain, other than the overusage of the stupid quote feature.

"I'd rather see you post something about your hobbies or personal experiences offline."
No you wouldn't, I've been down that road before. I've seen it over the years and years. Want to know what would happen if I would entertain you with such data?

1. It would be a long post. I don't chintz on the details.
2. You (or someone else) would post some stupid reply that I'm merely bragging about my life, etc.

If I told you about my personal history, etc - it would be met with contention. Think I'm assuming this? Nope, not at all. After all, why would you want to hear about my personal life? As many say "here", this isn't "real life", right?

Why do you need the quote button?

You realize you can cut out the bits of text you don't want... simmilar to how you use the other method.

Both equally valid.

The Wraith sucks. It's always people like him/her/it that drag political agendas into the threads and making them.. Well.... suck.

I vote "go away" and let us have our fun.

Oh yeah, and I'm developing a healthy obsession with bunkum. if you take out the "unk", all you're left with is "bum".

I like that.

Political? Odd, I don't recall mentioning any Democratic, Republican, or other party affiliation prior to this. Leave it to the Canadians. Hey, when is the group "Nelson" going to be making a come back?

Taunt me all you want. Beleive me man, I hafe WAAAAAAAAY better things to worry about and lose sleep over than some guy (who is, mind you, nothing more than text and an IP address to me)who has nothing better to do than try to illicit responses from me. Besides, with both you and the ever elusive bunkum in the same thread, hugs from her are much better than any hugs I'd get from you. (Even tho something tells me you need a hug too)

Thanks. But nice try.
