Why was crete such a strategic advantage in 1941, both for the germans, new Zealanders, and allies
As HELL said, Crete was very strategically placed. There were British airfields on the island and Britain could have easily struck oil fields in Persia (now Iran). Hitler needed those oil fields for his impending assault on Russia. If Hitler could take over Crete, then he could have driven the British out of the the Eastern Mediterranean. He then could have assaulted Cyprus and the Egyptian Delta.
The people of Crete also suffered savage punitive reprisals for their fighting and resistance and thousands of civilians were randomly executed, while entire communities were burned and destroyed by the Nazis.
