By Richard Kujath/Daily Sun staff writer
An 18-year-old Holmesville man was arrested at his home Monday evening after police say he tried to abduct an 18-year-old woman at the Indian Creek Mall in Beatrice.
Officers with the Beatrice Police Department, the Gage County Sheriff's Office and the Nebraska State Patrol arrested Sonny D. Balvin at about 7 p.m. Monday without a struggle.
At about 10:52 a.m., an 18-year-old Beatrice woman was leaving the mall headed to her pickup truck in the parking lot, when a white male approached her and tried to push her into the truck in an attempt to abduct her and the vehicle, Beatrice Police Chief Bruce Lang said. The woman, Lang said, "responded in the right way" by yelling loudly and apparently scaring off her attacker, who then ran into the mall. The woman, who has a sister who works at the mall, went in to her sister's place of employment and called the police, Lang said.
Based on witnesses' descriptions and a mall surveillance tape, police identified Balvin as the attempted kidnapper, Lang said. The arrest warrant for Balvin and a search warrant were served at Balvin's home, Lang said, and "evidence was recovered at the scene (residence)." Lang declined to state what type of evidence was recovered at the home.
Balvin, Lang said, "did not know the victim, but had stalked her prior to the attack."
Based on the mall surveillance tapes Lang said Balvin had followed the victim for a period of time.
"This was a random act, that's the scary part," Lang said.
"An abduction requires an immediate use of resources," he said, and he also thanked "other witnesses in and outside the mall who gave us information. We were able to piece this together rather quickly."
Lang attributed the quick arrest to the victim's conduct at the time, and the cooperation of both county judges and prosecutors, despite the fact that it was a holiday.
Lang said the police were fortunate an arrest was made, but they are most pleased he didn't get away with the woman.
"Under no circumstances leave that location with somebody," Lang said. "We know nothing good will happen if you leave that location. Something worse always happens."
He said the woman's conduct was "commendable."
Lang said Balvin, who was arrested for attempted kidnapping, a class three felony, "didn't display a weapon." Balvin is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.
I used to go to school with Sonny, until he dropped out a few years back. He was a dumbass back when I knew him, but I didn't know he was this big of a dumbass.
