The Idea of Censorship

I just want to say right off the bat that this is not totally about Censorship on The Asylum, but I will speak a bit about it later.

The Dictonary defines censorship as "the institution or practice of censoring" ok, no help there. So let us look at censor "A person empowered to suppress publications or excise any matter in them thought to be immoral, seditious or otherwise undesirable". Ok that is only one definition out of a few, but let's go with that. What I find amusing about this is the fact that "immoral, seditious or otherwise undesirable" material vares from person to person. What I find underirable, another person may not, and vise versa. What brought this all about was this. I sat down and caught the end of a movie called "Dirty Pictures". In this movie a man who ran an art gallery had an exibition of photos by a man who was known to have pictures some would concider lewd and sexual. Some of the pictures were of nude children. Some people found this offensive and a lawsuit follwed. The man who ran the art gallery won in the end, but what happened next what a man who talked about "fighting the fight" and "doing what was right" what he was speaking of was the "moral degridation" of america. Now I see no true moral degridation. What I see is products that would be concidered lewd by some, becomming more accesible to everyone. It seem that there are certian groups who believe that everyone should share the opinions they have, and like it. Well the fact of the matter is, no one can be right. In my opinion, if you do not like what you see on TV, turn the channel. If you do not like what you hear on the radio, turn the station. If you do not like certian things you see in movies, don't watch them. So on and so forth. Well then there is the fact that children are getting access to these same things. Well maybe parents should control the things that thier children watch, and if the children get them from friends, well maybe they should just accept the fact that their children are going to be exposed to it sooner or later. It is near impossible to keep them away from all those things they may concider lewd, immoral, too violent, whatever it may be. Now some censorship can be a good thing. Take for instance here at The Asylum. There has been some talk lately about cesorship here. I think that the censorship that goes on here is a good thing. The admins of this site are simply trying to protect themselves. They do not want to get in trouble for things that go on here, or lose sponsorship for them. Totally understandable I think. When it comes to things like movies, televison, and music. They have ratings and parental advisory stickers for a reason. For the parents to do what they were put in charge of doing when they had children, being parents. Video games, music, movies, and so on should not be banned for what they are. There are many out there who enjoy what others concider wrong. As I said, just don't watch/play/listen to whatever you find wrong, and move on. Do not by any means put the government in charge of what we can see or listen to. That will just cause a whole mess of problems no one is ready to deal with. We should all be free to choose what we see and do. Don't let our government be the national parents of america.

Last night I dreamt of a small grey kitten with some strange disease which meant it had to be killed. It was up to me to cut it's little throat, although unfortunately the serrated knife I had to use was not sharp. I smelt the damp breath of its cough when the dark blood dripped into its lungs, I watched the look of panic in its eyes, while clumsily fumbling to find the notch between vertebrae so i could get the head completely off. It was only then, as I woke from this scene, that I thought maybe bludgeoning it to death would have been more humane.
Now all this is well and good, but what disturbs me is I woke up with a huge erection that wouldn't go down.

If you could consciously censor your own dreams, would you?

VKL, you covered a bunch of bases here. I don't have time to hit on them all right now, but i agree with you about people forcing their morality on others.

As for censorship at the Asylum, any "censoring" that goes on isn't for the sake of the admins, it is for everyone's benefit. The Asylum doesn't censor, but there are rules to follow. You break those rules (i.e. warez of child porn), you get your posts pulled. If it was really censorship, there wouldn't be rules outline the "censoring" policies.

Notice also that there is plenty of talk by those who got "censored." If they truly were censored, the admins would try their damndest to keep the whole issue under wraps.

I realize that this isn't necessarily your position, VKL. I'm not arguing at you. Just calling it like I see it at this moment.

Well it is censoring. They censor items they deem inappropriate. Which I will say again I DON'T ARGUE WITH! Sense there are no written rules that I know of. How can one break the rules?

Hey now! I was not trying to start an argument about the rules. I agreed with what ya'll do. I have no problems with that! So there are rules. I did say there are no rules that *I* knew of.
