Well, here's the thing.
Pictures don't normally mean that much to me. Like, some fucking mermaid holding a skull isn't the sort of thing I am interested in. I mean, maybe if I got that dude standing in front of the Tianemmen Square tank, that would mean something, but most pictures are just pretty pictures.
Text, and specifically quotes, do tend to hold meaning for me.
A quote I have had in mind for a few years that I thought would make a cool tat is the following:
"He who makes a beast of himself
gets rid of the pain of being a man."
---Dr Johnson
The opening of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, FYI. That quote stands out for a number of reasons. It marks a period of my life (that I am arguably not out of yet), I like the thought of the quote and the thought of the converse, that he who gets rid of the pain of being a man makes a beast out of himself, i.e. loses his humanity. Pain and being human are inseprable, so you just have to take and accept the pain or you become nothing more then an animal. Just a quote that A: really provokes thought in me, B: is kinda my motto, C: is from one of my all time favorite cultural works of the 20th century yada yada yada.
In any case, I am all for just getting it in a simple font somewhere in my back, but I wouldn't want it to be too large, though it would have to be legible. karen thinks it's stupid. (what do you all think)?
Another idea I had works in a whole nother level to it.
I have this obsession with old style typewriters. I would try and find some pictures of what I am talking about on the web (will keep trying), but can't seem to find any, though I could point some out to you in 30 seconds in a Salvation Army. In any case, the old style, like what William S Borroughs had in Naked Lunch, that type. I fucking love those things, have been meaning to start collecting them. That and I fancy myself a writer on good days, hence some meaning from it.
So I was thinking maybe a detailed old style typewriter, black, with a white page being typed, and that quote being the only thing on that page (still needs to be very legible though).
Realize that would probably be big and expensive, though I wouldn't want it to be enormous, it may have to be to satisfy the level of detail I want. What does everyone else think of that idea? Cool? Not cool?
That's what I'm thinking now, though it would probably be awhile before I could get the whole thing done.
Have also been looking into armbands, karen suggested possibly incorporating the quote into an arm band design of some type, which could also be cool.
And the only other idea that has interested me is my back being covered in a design that looks like paint chipping off a wall.
Thoughts on any of these?
