GFY!'s PEOPLE REPORT!
BETTE STILL STRUGGLES THROUGH SITCOM
It seems that every time you see Bette Midler interviewed on TV she remarks about how difficult it is to keep a weekly sitcom going. Now gossip columnist Liz Smith says that it appears that Midler is doing all she can to end her commitment to the weekly program. Smith recalls that on a recent visit to David Letterman, Bette said
that she had no idea how difficult weekly television would be. Amid all of this, Midler has won the People's Choice and TV Guide awards and was nominated for a Golden Globe.
ORIGINAL CAST PREDICTS NEW 'SURVIVORS'
In the latest edition of Us Weekly, the magazine polls some of the cast members of the original "Survivor" program and asks them about the second edition of the immensely popular series. Richard Hatch
-- the millionaire winner of the first go 'round -- says he will be "least-least" surprised if Jeff, the computer guy, wins. Rudy Boesch -- the retired Navy Seal and recent host of a "survival" series on
the History Channel -- tells the publication he thinks that Amber might take the prize. Meanwhile, Sean Kenniff -- based in Manhattan
-- says that he thinks Nick will win, despite the fact that he's currently "under the radar."
THERE'S NO QUESTION ABOUT THIS 'SURVIVOR'
The last survivor of one of the most tragic fires in American history has died. Rose Freedman, grandmother of Fox TV's co-pres-
ident Dana Walden, was the first person to be featured on the PBS series "The Living Century." Variety says she died of natural
causes at her home in Beverly Hills. In 1911 she was working at the Triangle Shirtwaist (clothing) Co. in Manhattan when it was
suddenly engulfed in flames. The fire claimed nearly 150 lives and sparked a national call for better fire safety regulations. By the way, one reason so many died in the fire is that workers were never told of additional stairwells which were for use only by management. Additionally, the main corridor had a narrow checkpoint installed so workers could be inspected to see if they were taking clothing from the factory when they left. That bottleneck
proved fatal for many. True "survivor" Rose Freedman was 107.
U.K. OFFICIALS DEALING WITH DISEASE
Veterinary officials in the United Kingdom say that the recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease is leading to quarantines and cancellations of many events. Published reports indicate that organizers in Ireland say they are calling off the country's biggest St. Patrick's Day parade. Scottish officials have put Dolly -- the cloned sheep -- into quarantine. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Tony Blair says the outbreak has been traced to a single farm.
MICHAEL JACKSON AND RABBI TO MAKE JOINT SPEECH
Mega-star Michael Jackson and his close friend and spiritual advisor, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, are set to make what some are calling a "very surprising" speech at Oxford University. Published reports indicate
that it's not to announce the singer's conversion to Judaism. Lately Boteach and Jackson have engaged in many charitable projects. Boteach has become a cheerleader for Jackson's work in helping children with
cancer and says he does not believe the molestation accusations against the singer.
SHOPPING WITH THE STARS
When Hollywood stars want to get away -- often dressed-down and looking ragged to hide their identities -- where do they go? Cindy Adams, writing in the latest edition of the New York Post, reports that Jodie Foster adores garage sales. She wears grubby jeans as she drives through Los Angeles neighborhoods looking for bargains. One day spa desk clerk tells United Press International that he was amazed at how
grubby the gorgeous star can look when she wants to. Catherine Deneuve likes second-hand stores and thrift shops. Adams says that on a recent shopping spree Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds bought six hats at a San Francisco thrift store. One cost $38. It's shaped like a toilet seat.
