WHY????
Why is it that every few months, maybe even more frequently, somone takes a leave of absence....and announces it? Rarely does anyone give a real explanation for it either. They are bored, or they outgrow us or they simply "just need time". Well BLAH!!!!
I just don't understand. In RL, if I need space, I take a few days to myself. I don't send out a letter to each and every person that I might have contact with telling them that they wont hear from me for a few days.
The way I see it, I have email, a phone and a door - if someone is that concerned they can find me.
And what is gone for a "while" anyway? A day, a week, a month? WHAT?
If I have nothing to say, I don't post. If I have things in RL to take care of then I take care of them, but this place isn't something that requires you to be here 24 hrs a day. If you've made real friends in here then you wouldn't cease all contact with them anyway, right? You'll email, phone or sustain some type of contact. So why the big announcements? If you don't plan on keeping in touch with certain people then you aren't really a friend, right?
And...AND...the site wont last if people don't stick around. Even if you have other things to deal with it doesn't take much to stop in and see what's going on.
Ok, that's all. See now that people are leaving I'm forced to freaking post!!!!! Come back!!!!!! I hate refreshing and seeing nothing new.

i dont know why kitten, but it seems that we tend to worry if we dont know where a regular ran off to. were all kinda close here and we MISS eachother when someone bails for a bit. i see the arguing here very similar to the fighting you would see in any family of close people who care about eachother. its easy to get on eachothers nerves etc.

But Chelle, certainly someone taking a little time off from the forum doesn't necessarily mean they're taking time off from the friendship, right? In most of these posts the person says they can be reached via email and will return emails. So, what's to miss if you're not losing the contact?

kitten: in my case, i was going to be unable to be reached, as my computer connection was going to be down for a month. i wanted to ensure that no one tried to email me in my absence, as i wouldn't have had access to read it. as far as others...there's alot of people here that are involved in this site at another level. they moderate a forum, or are ops on chat, or maybe they edit columns. so it's their way of letting everyone know that they won't be here to take care of that responsibility. and then you get those "fine! i'm leaving!" threads that are just there for pure attention and sympathy.
think about it this way. let's say that you're a regular at a bar. you're there every single day after work, for at least a few minutes. you've been there every day without fail for months. if you were gonna take a few days' vacation, it would be the normalest thing in the world to say "hey guys, you won't see me tomorrow. i'm gonna take a break. see you in a few days." right?

I absolutely agree, Morgana. I think if it's someone that has a lot to do with the site, say an admin or someone writing a column, then something should be said. If it is going to have an impact on the site, it should be stated w/o a doubt. It was the attention type that I was addressing w/o directly trying to address it. hehe. I guess I'm not as outspoken as you are. *smiles* it's very annoying when people say things simply to get a reaction. Especially when most of the time they say they're leaving and then they're back the next day.

everyone loves attention holly, yourself included. some people dont know how to get attention as well as you and me do.
but i doubt that is the case with marc, i give him plenty of attention, and so do countless others. he is such a slut.

When bowmore vanished on us for an extended amount of time without saying something to anyone, everyone got really worried about him.
A little note on the fridge goes a long way.

but the reason everyone was worried about bowmore was because he wasn't responding to emails either. no one knew where he was.

Yah i tend to get worried when people stop responding to emails. Of course it usually turns out that the person filtered my email address because i'd been stalking him....errrr.......shit nevermind.

I thought it went without saying, but maybe not ... we (the admins) really would appreciate some kind of notice (email would be real nice) from people involved in the running of the site when they are taking off for good or going to be gone for a while. It also applies if they've just lost interest in participating in whatever role they had taken. There are plenty of other people who are interested in moderator positions and such.

Like I said, a little note on the fridge goes a long way.
Now, imagine this note is a neon sign, and the fridge is the size of a rather large building. I hope you're getting the idea of what I'm saying.

On the other hand, you know what gets me? In chat, when Paint has to let everyone know when he is taking a damn shower, going to the store, changing a diaper, vacuuming, etc. Every fucking time he goes to do something besides clattering away at the keyboard, he has to change his nic announcing his current endeavor. Paint-shitting, Paint-hurling, I mean jebus, like I give a shit what he is doing when he isn't at the computer.
It never bothers me when others do it, just him.
He also cheats at scoring scrabble and uses words like 'poo', in case you didn't see that in Karen's thread.

If that's the case, then he should change his nic to "Paint-Cheating"!!
