Post GFY!'s PEOPLE REPORT for 4/5/01

Copperfield Fumes

Master illusionist David Copperfield, 44, survived the "Tornado of Fire" finale to his CBS TV special Tuesday night with two words: "I'm hot." As two stagehands sprayed fire extinguishers on his legs, the slender magician fell to the floor and then got up as the music swelled and the network cut to commercials. Total time spent inside the 2,000-degree "Vortex of Fire": 30 seconds. "It was exhausting, and it was scary," Copperfield told reporters afterwards. "I felt a burning sensation in my throat." Preparation for the stunt was not without incident. Copperfield was taken to a New York hospital on Friday in a state of "extreme exhaustion" after he collapsed during rehearsals for the special. Earlier, crew member Cathy Henderson sued Copperfield and his companies for $15,000, claiming in her court papers that she was injured when she was thrown 10 feet in the air by the power of the man-made tornado during a rehearsal in Portugal.

LeAnn to Play Host

One week after her stepmother, Catherine Dickenson Rimes, publicly dissed her in a Tennessee newspaper for being "manipulative" and a "spoiled person," country superstar LeAnn Rimes, 18, has signed on to host the 36th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, ACM director Fran Boyd has announced. The ceremony is scheduled to air live on CBS on May 9. "We are delighted to have LeAnn Rimes as our host for this year's show," Boyd said in a statement. "She has proven herself to be an impressive and enduring performer in country music." In an interview with the Tennessean, Catherine Rimes had released taped phone conversations between LeAnn and her father, Wilbur Rimes, whom she had sued in order to break a recording contract he had brokered on her behalf. LeAnn also told Wilbur in the courtroom, "I hate you." The tapes revealed LeAnn's satisfaction with her current release, "I Need You," contrary to public statements the singer had made, as well as a plan to win the judge's sympathy by crying in the courtroom during litigation to nullify her record contract. Only a few days ago, LeAnn thanked her fans online for their continued support during what she called a "difficult time" in her life.

Mighty Mouse to Return

Mighty Mouse, 60, is coming out of retirement for the first time since 1971, in order to star at the center of a TV promotional campaign for cheese, reports the Associated Press.

Straw in Jail?

Former New York Yankees and Mets slugger Darryl Strawberry, 39, who is battling colon cancer, drug addiction and severe depression, has tested positive for cocaine, according to a report from his Florida probation officer.

Brandy in D.C.

Grammy winning "Moesha" star Brandy, 22, will join First Lady Laura Bush on Wednesday in saluting young female volunteers at the Seventeen/Cover Girl Volunteerism Awards, reports The Washington Post.

Beckhams in Court

A London judge on Tuesday ruled in favor of soccer star David Beckham and Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham's claim for damages from their former bodyguard, Mark Niblett, 40, whom they accused of disclosing secrets in violation of a confidentiality agreement he had signed with them, reports Reuters.

Dave on Campus

David Letterman spoke yesterday on "The Use of Humor in the Media to Cover Politics and National Affairs" at visiting professor Al Gore's class at New York's Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Reality TV Producer Apologizes

The producers of the American reality television show ``Survivor'' apologized Wednesday after two cast members took coral from Australia's ecologically sensitive Great Barrier Reef.

Australian authorities have been investigating complaints after an episode aired in the United States last week showed two contestants in the trouble-prone CBS show being flown to an island on the reef and returning with pieces of coral as souvenirs for other cast members.

It is illegal to take coral from the World Heritage listed reef without a permit. Penalties include fines of $10,780 for individuals and about $55,000 for corporations.

``On behalf of myself, production and the survivors involved, we extend our sincerest apologies for this error,'' ''Survivor'' executive producer Mark Burnett said in a statement released by Australian network Channel Nine Wednesday. ``Please know that this was an honest mistake which we deeply regret.''

The offending episode will air in Australia later on Wednesday. A Channel Nine spokeswoman said a disclaimer would be broadcast before the ``Survivor: The Australian Outback (news - Y! TV)'' episode saying that the removal of coral from the reef is illegal.

Marine park officials said there were also complaints a helicopter had flown too close to seabird rookeries.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park covers the biggest coral structure in the world and is home to complex coral reef systems and wildlife habitats.

Australia's air force was reprimanded by the government last week for giving Survivor cast members a free ride on a transport plane in a publicity stunt which cost taxpayers A$300,000.

The show also outraged animal rights activists in February when a cast member was shown slaughtering a wild pig.

Was that the deal where they went into an enclosed space and were supposed to live for a year without any outside help? But they cheated?
