Mother Nature stomps the hell out of Colorado communications
So I missed a few days, because the elements came down and laughed at the puny works of man. You see, in this town most of the communications networks has something to with Cheyenne Mountain. You might recognize this as the home of NORAD. It is also the rather convnient place to situate things like microwave towers and radio broadcast towers as it allows a massive line of sight covering most of the city. Well a couple of nights ago we had a one of our famous spring storms, 4 inches of snow in the downtown area, 6 inches in my area, worse int he areas north and east of here. None of that compared to what happened up there on the summit of Cheyenne. 100 mph winds tore throught the communications array on the top of the mountain. Up there was the mircrowave array that provides my internet connection. Wednesday there was nothing, I tried pinging the tower and it was like talking to a brick wall. Today, I was able to get a feeble response from the tower, continous ping produced a few replies, about 80% packet loss. Todays message on the info line informed us that repair engineers had reached the tower site, by snow-cat. I love it when we in Colorado get fat and lazy and then the weather shows us that we aren't so secure as we thought.
