Post do we have a soul?

The question of whether we are any more than the sum of our parts seems like it could never be answered by a logical thinker. Religious folks claim that they KNOW we have a soul, they KNOW there is a god. They feel it. Well how can you KNOW anything? How can you KNOW that there is any truth to the perceptions of your own limited brain? On the other hand, does it seem right that when we die we simply cease to exist? No light, no dark, no feeling. No consienseness. That's fucking scary. That's just about unthinkable. I always claim that these are beliefs that one must develop for themselves over a lifetime, but how is any progress be made in such an investigation? How the fuck will I EVER know if there is something spiritual to this shell or not?

You can't know it. You have to decide for yourself, using what you have between your ears...and then you have to have faith.

No, not faith in some nebulous omnipotent being. Faith in YOURSELF. Faith in your mental faculties and your ability to apply them.

Go with it.

While it is a possibility that there is a seperate entity which gives us our 'uniqueness' that we cannot taste, touch, hear, smell, or see, it seems unlikely that it actually exists. We cannot verifiably detect such an entity, and as such it is just a theory without any evidence or logical support for its existence. Hell, if I told you in all seriousness that I had a pet elephant that had those same characteristics, you'd consider sending me to a psychiatrist.

In other words, until such time as we start detecting strange patterns emerging from the bodies of dead people, assumptions that souls exist is something that will give us skeptics much enjoyment. There are much more mundane and logical explanations for human behaviour and volition.

Thumbs down

I don't have one. I sold mine to some guy for a stick of gum.

It was stale.

The brain is a fucking amazing and mysterious thing that we don't really know shit about. The fact that I can type this, let alone think this, is incredible and damn near inexplainable.

But what of man's soul? And what of the soul of all things alive? And, in other less-familier ideologies, what of the souls of all things? Is there some essense of us, in any form, that will never die? We exist, but do we cease to exist?

well here is my drunkin opinion of the soal

well first thanks the the language i speak i cant truley explain the soal because there isn't any real words to do so... but i will try anyhow...

i think a soal is the brain waves that are considered "conisiousness" (be gental with spelling i an RiZZ afret all and drunk and this might go somewere) because for a discussion i cannot go relogious at all (tho i am a Deist (paint spelling?) de-sium anyhow... the brain works on elitriciyt and chemicasl balinces... there for when you die yes that could mean the end... with out the elitricity and the chemicals... there is nothing... but at the same time the way i see it... iu dont care... i'll find out when the lights go out...

(edit 4 dessuition hehe thx bun)

The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. One should, for example, be able to see that things are hopeless and yet be determined to make them otherwise.
