Fake People

i had a friend on aol. he lives in michigan. we talked for the last 2 years. we talked for hours. I let him call me once. He told me he was in high school. he just turned 17 this year. His mom died from cancer and now he was living with his dad. i got mad at him for not telling me she died. i wanted to attend her wake. We talked so much. He knew all my personal business. Well today i found out he was a 42 year old married white man with kids. I am in a state of shock. I don't even know what to say. My feeling is hurt.

Keta, I know it hurts when this sort of thing happens. It lessens us all as Internet personas.

I was speaking with a dear friend the other night about this very thing....that the Net allows certain people to don a mask, and behind that mask they can justify and rationalize any action they wish to take, thus avoiding the consequences of conscience.

I will not further demean you or myself, as internet personas, by calling you a victim. I will merely tell you that I am sorry for this, and remind you that many, if not most of us, are as true on the Net as we are IRL, and not to let the few poison our minds and hearts.

People fake themselves in real life as well... only in more subtle and often more fundamental ways. When you can't control something, there's not much point in letting it bother you, though.
