This e-mail was forwarded to me. I found the virus was also on my
computer.
Please follow the instructions below to check and remove this virus from
your
computer asap.

***

Hey Friends,
I found this on my computer... please follow the directions and remove
it from yours TODAY!!!!!!!

It was brought to my attention yesterday that a virus
was on all of our computers here at work. I do not know how
long it has been on our computers, but Virus software can
not detect it. It will not become active until June 1,
2001, at that point it will become active and will be to late. It
wipes out all files and folders on the hard drive. This
virus travels thru E-mail and migrates to the 'C:\windows\command'
folder. To find it and get rid of it off of your computer,
do the following.

Go to the "START" button.
Go to "FIND" or "SEARCH"
Go to "FILES & FOLDERS"
Make sure the find box is searching the "C:" drive.
Type in; SULFNBK.EXE
Begin search.
If it finds it, highlight it.
Go to 'File' and delete it.
Close the find Dialog box
Open the Recycle Bin
Find the file and delete it from the Recycle bin
You should be safe.

The bad part is: You need to contact everyone you
have sent ANY E-mail to in the past few months. I do not
know how long this has been on our computers. Two computers at
Midlands Tech. have been found with this virus on it. One I
had sent E-mail to, one I have not.

DO NOT RELY ON YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE. McAFEE NOR
NORTON CAN DETECT IT BECAUSE IT DOES NOT BECOME A VIRUS UNTIL JUNE
1ST.
IT WILL BE
TO LATE THEN. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT OPEN THE FILE!!!
*end of email*

if by chance you did get this email and thought it was true read on

****

Please, they do not reenvien this email under any point of view since he is not real. It is only managed to propagate a false alarm yes reenvían it. Notify please to who was sent them of it, and, reportenos its existence through our form of contact.

If you have eliminated file SULFNBK.exe of your system, follows these steps to recover it:

The first which one must verify before making these steps are the existence of the archives of installation in their hard disk or if a CD of installation of the operating system is had. The following steps will be exemplified being based on which the archives of installation in the hard disk under a Win98 directory depending on disc C exist:

To open the Explorer of Windows. For it it goes to Beginning - > Programs - > Explorer of Windows, or also it can be opened acceding to Beginning - > To execute..., in the window that will be opened to write explorer.exe and to press the button To accept.

In the Explorer of Windows to sail towards the directory where it has the installation archives (in this case, c:\Win98). For it it must first go to My PC, in the left part of the Explorer of Windows, to select with double click hard disk C: in the right part, and soon, of the new listing, to make double click in Win98 (or the directory where you have the installation archives).

Once fact this, must go to Beginning - > To execute..., and write command.com, and soon press To accept. This will open an interface of MSDOS in a new window. In her a black screen will be seen surely, where it will be possible to be read:

Microsoft(R) Windows 98
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1981-1999

Underneath it it will have to see:

C:\win98 >

where the part after \, must be the directory where it has the installation archives If this is not thus, it writes where it is the cursor titilando, the following commando:

CD\win98

where WIN98 is the directory where it has the installation archives and it presses Enter.

Now it writes where this the cursor the commando:

EXTRACT / and / L c:\windows\command PRECOPY1.cab SULFNBK.exe

This will extract file SULFNBK.exe of the installation archives and it will copy directory C:\windows\command.
If you cannot make these steps she can be due to some of the following causes:

That it does not have the archives of installation in his hard disk or a CD
That between the installation archives, is not the PRECOPY1.cab.
That its operating system is not installed in the directory Windows.
If this happens, will have to adapt the passages according to the characteristics of its system.

Hoaxes. Many people believe them. Others aren't so sure but forward them anyway "just in case". No matter how you slice them, hoaxes are a problem and now they've taken a new tack. Originating in Brazil, a new hoax alleges the file SULFNBK.EXE is in fact a virus and urges users to search their system for the presence of the file. The hoax warns, even "Norton did not discover it". Perhaps this is because the file is not infected.

A word of caution. Any executable file has the potential to be infected. Worse, viruses like Magistr can pick certain files at random, infect it, and send it off via email to others. So the potential also exists for the file SULFNBK.EXE to be plucked by Magistr. Of course, any portable executable (PE EXE) file up to 132K in length could just as easily be sent, so there's no special distinction to the SULFNBK.EXE file.

Just what is SULFNBK.EXE? It's a utility shipped as part of the Windows 98 operating system that allows users to restore long file names. Thus, anyone using the Windows 98 operating system would find this file on their system. If the hoax were received by these users, and believed, many might delete the file thinking their antivirus software had somehow failed to detect the virus. In fact, it wouldn't be the first time signature-based scanners failed to detect a new virus, making the entire hoax even easier to believe.

If you aren't confused yet, you should be. Hoaxes survive simply by causing confusion. They provide just enough real sounding information to guarantee a pretty high degree of faith. The more believable, the more users willing to pass it along. Hence hoaxes are very much like a manually driven virus, relying on the user to deliberately pass along the "infection". In the case of the SULFNBK.EXE warning there's a double whammy: as users pass it along, it clogs email servers and drains resources; and those who delete it may need the file at some point. Worse, this could be a stepping stone to a new trend in hoax writing - targeting necessary system files, warning of dire consequences and instructing users to immediately delete them. If the right files were targeted, users following the warning's instructions could find themselves worse off than if a "real" virus had hit. In other words, hoaxes may soon be featuring malicious payloads deliberately executed by the gullible and unsuspecting user.

Common sense provides the best cure. If you aren't sure, don't forward it. Forget the "just in case" excuse - it's downright dangerous. Unless the warning comes from a known and reputable source, send it to the Recycle Bin and not to your friends and co-workers.

Special thanks to Giordani Rodrigues, editor of InfoGuerra.com for providing details regarding this hoax. His article, in Portuguese, can be found at: http://www.infoguerra.com.br/infone...8228057,26932,.
