Walking away from
He stared into the heavens, the night clear in the way that only a frigid late winter evening could be. The stars were brilliant, shinging bright enough to hurt. In the freezing temperatures, exhalations became miniature weather systems. Fractal patterns roiled in the still air.
A slight shift and he could see her from the corner of his eye, even as he continued to study the restless steam pulsing from hs nostrils.
"You are very quiet."
He responded with only a grunt, his mind racing through a madhouse of images. Possibility climbed over impossibility, rendering images that buffeted his soul with scouring sands.
A tear escaped and slid down his cheek, thank fully on the far side from her, it ran it's course unobserved. He wiped away all traces under the guise of warming his hands.
She moved closer to him and reached out her hand. His attempt to refrain from flinching was only partly successful. The pain rolled out from her in waves, the slight rejection causing a deeper wound than physical blow.
"I'm sorry."
Three steps and he let the tears free to play in the wind rushing past his head.
