"meticulously dismembered"
New York man accused of killing 2, for their apartments
A man was charged with killing two people -- one of whom was dismembered -- so he could move into their apartments, police said.
Bernard Perez, 20, was arrested early Monday after police found him and another man inside one of the victim's apartment in upper Manhattan.
Investigators found a man's severed hands in a plastic bag in one location and his torso and legs in another. His head was in a plastic bag under his kitchen sink, said Cadet Latoneya Burwell, a police spokeswoman.
Perez and Rahman Williams, 21, were charged with first-degree murder in the slaying, Burwell said. Police tentatively identified the victim as Gerry Pollard, a man in his late 40s.
Perez also was charged with murdering Doris Drakeford, 44, who lived in the same building as Pollard. Her hogtied body was found last week in the Harlem River, and police said she had been strangled.
Police said Perez confessed to killing the two because he wanted to move into their apartments.
Under questioning, Perez admitted that he strangled Drakeford in January in her apartment, two floors below Pollard's apartment at the Dyckman Houses, police said.
Once police identified her body, they found Perez living in Drakeford's apartment, investigators said. Since her Social Security check was sent directly to the Housing Authority every month to cover her rent, no one noticed she was not living in her apartment, investigators said.
Steven Reed, a spokesman for the Bronx district attorney, said Tuesday that Perez was interviewed about Drakeford last week, but admitted nothing about her death. Perez was issued a desk appearance ticket by police on May 24 alleging criminal trespassing into Drakeford's apartment.
Perez did not return to Drakeford's apartment but went back to the complex, where he once lived and where his grandmother still resides, police said.
Police discovered Pollard's body around 3 a.m. Monday, Chief of Detectives William Allee said.
Police said they found blood and water in the bathtub, some cutting tools, and blood on some clothing.
Neither Williams nor Perez had appeared in court by midday Tuesday.
Perez, who tried to kill himself while in police custody Monday, was on parole until July 15, 2002, for a robbery conviction.
Tom Grant, a spokesman for the state parole board, said his agency was not notified of Perez's trespassing charge.

Nurse charged in dismemberment case
TOMS RIVER, New Jersey (AP) -- A New York nurse has been charged with killing two men whose remains were found stuffed in plastic trash bags along New Jersey highways in 1992 and 1993.
Richard W. Rogers Jr., 50, was arrested Tuesday in New York City and charged with two counts of murder. Ocean County Prosecutor David Millard said Rogers "meticulously dismembered" the two victims with a knife and handsaw.
Millard also said police are actively investigating Rogers with regard to other dismemberment cases that occurred in the early 1990s.
Thomas R. Mulcahy, 58, a Massachusetts computer executive, disappeared July 8, 1992, after attending a business meeting in New York. Two days later, his head and other remains were found in bags at a New Jersey picnic area, and parts of his legs were discovered at a rest stop.
On May 10, 1993, the remains of Anthony E. Marrero, 44, of Manhattan, were found in a bag along a roadside. He was last seen in New York City six days earlier.
The prosecutor would not comment on a motive but said Mulcahy was known to frequent gay bars and that Marrero worked as a gay prostitute in New York City.
The break in the case came three weeks ago when fingerprints taken off the plastic bags were allegedly matched with Rogers' in Maine, where he had had some contact with authorities.
