Mr. Nyet comes back to town

So President Putin of Russia has decided to play the power game. And I have to say as power plays go its a damn fine one. If Bush wants to abolish ABM and introduce his missile defense, then why should'nt Russia start arming itself with multiple=warhead missiles? The fact that multiple warheads would probably make NMD defunct and pointless might go to explaining the apparent upset in the Bush administration over this one. I guess you have to see from Russia's point of view. It sees NMD and the end of ABM as having the consequence of giving the US straegic superiority over the world. So why not redress the balance of power?

Russia may be cash-strapped, but they certainly have the funds to add multiple warheads to there existing arsenal, and also to the new missiles. Of course, some people will say that Putin is being hypocritcal. After all he said that ending ABM and implemneting missile defense would result in an arms race. His actions and rationale are in fact the very arms race he was concerned with. But hey, if you get rid of ABM what do you expect?

As I said at the top, this is a superb power play by Russia. It flips the bird at NMD and proves what the consequences will be of the implementing the 'as yet to proven to work' system. I think that the end result of this power play will more than likely be the renegotiation of ABM and not its abandonment. A renegotiation that Bush and Colin Powell will be hard pressed to come out looking like the winners. Russia should be praised for its willingness to stop the abandonment of the pillar of international security and anti-proliferation treaty.

I guess Bush can't judge people looking into their eyes, and giving them a soul gaze

The missile defense that Bush wants has so many problems already, and it doesn't help President Bush any that Russia just added another to the list. You don't want to fuck with a powerhouse like Russia, that has a lot of neighbors that wouldn't mind getting a few nuclear weapons, to put it not so eloquently.

Putin made a beautiful move, and I can't wait to see what the reponse is.

i'm predicting a fumble. i really don't think bush, or any of the potential candidates we had on our plate, has the skill to put much past putin. that guy scares me, and not in a bad way.

on a different point, i think the fact that this can become an issue is sad. the military depresses me.

the sooner Bush is assasinated the better!

he is one great big fuck up. it was a fuck up that allowed him into office in the first place.....the man needs to get some intelligence from somewhere, who are his aids that have given him these stupid ideas?

They are not making more effective missiles. They are saying that if Bush presses ahead unilaterally with NMD to give the US a superior strategic advantage the Russians willreacte to it. Now given that missile defense requires the ending of the anti-proliferation treaty he is doing nothing wrong whatsoever in threatening it.
