Woman charged with animal cruelty for piercing ear of rescued deer
HARRISONBURG, Va. - A woman who tried to improve upon nature was ordered to pay the veterinary bill for a fawn whose ears she pierced.
An animal-cruelty charge against Bettie Phillips was suspended Tuesday after she insisted she meant no harm. Phillips, 54, of Hiddenite, N.C., found the 2-month-old deer near a highway in western Virginia on July 3 as she drove to visit her daughter in Harrisonburg.
Later that day, she and her daughter pierced its ears by pushing the posts of two small cross-shaped earrings through the thin flesh of the deer's ears about one-half inch from their tips.
Police found the deer two days later in the back of Phillips' Ford Explorer while the two women were shopping. It was slightly dehydrated and its ears were inflamed and infected, said Ned Gentz, chief veterinarian at the Wildlife Center of Virginia.
The animal was treated with antibiotics and released into the wild on Aug. 20.
"I thought it would be pretty," Phillips said at the time. "You can get a little kid's ears pierced. What's the difference between a person's (ears) and a baby deer's?"
She and her daughter, Gerry Rae Beckner, 33, pleaded guilty Tuesday to transporting wildlife without a valid permit.
Judge William Heatwold ordered Phillips to pay $250 to the Wildlife Center and ordered Beckner to do 20 hours of community service.
Cruelty charges against both will be dismissed if they stay out of trouble for six months.
